If you’re sure you are the only one using the rack, perhaps you could park your bike the long way on the back side of the rack?
If there were no open parking spots, sure. As you can see from the pics, there are plenty of open and marked spots. There’s no need for the car to be in the bike parking.
edit: and yeah, meant to add that I would LOVE to see this rack near the front. It’s at the FAR end of the parking lot (which really isn’t that big). If it wasn’t for the way the planter is on one side, I’d think it was an after thought, but this definitely was “engineered” in to the initial plans. I guess it’s not up front because the building is mostly glass walls (which is really cool) and they thought a bike rack was ugly or something

Four days! Haha, you crazy.
LOL I’d have to ride like 4 days straight! Fortunately, you get credit for the challenge if you complete the mileage in 14 days, and I’ll need all 10 of the extra days hah

ParticipantHad a great time! Thanks again for setting this all up!
(sadly, I hit Metro Center again, one of these times I’ll drink enough beer to make it all the way back home)

Um, would a heavy-duty traffic cone parked dead square in the middle of the space help?
I certainly would leave a polite note asking the driver to choose another space because it’s hard to get my bike in and out without scratching his vehicle.
Or markings on the space, a giant X, to indicate it is not a parking space. In the larger scheme of things, this isn’t worth going to war over. Save that for when the driver bumps your back tire or pushes you off the shoulder.
The particular facility I work in is not very large. The only people out here are some facilities people, engineers who support the servers (I’m one of those) and some administrative folks. There are a few thousand servers, so there’s enough people here that I don’t know every one, but just about everyone. I’m the only one who bikes out here, so that bike rack hasn’t been used for probably a few years. People have grown accustomed to using that space to park their precious vehicles away from everyone so they don’t get scratched up. The funny thing is, the paint on this particular vehicle is peeling in a few spots on the roof…. so it’s not really that nice in the first place. No one has ever cared about people parking there until I started work out here. For whatever reason, THIS person hogged the entire spot, sometimes people will share it if the parking fills up (which it does occasionally). This person was just blatant about it, which was irritating. I don’t bike every day, but I bike enough that people have seen my bike out there a few days every week. The guards made the driver move the car, so they definitely got the message. It isn’t worth going to war over, especially since the building is small enough that I’ll see the person often. I’m trying to “share” too, it’s a huge spot and I’m the only cyclist, and not even every day. Maybe others will join me as they learn about the distance I cover and as I gush about how much I love cycling to work.

To be fair, I encountered at least 2 dozen examples of bicycle arrogance last night riding about a mile up 15th street cycleway in NW. In general, I think it all balances out and we’ve got plenty of examples of people behaving selfishly in all camps.

Dirt.
Yeah, agreed. I was thinking about that when I posted. I originally was going to name the thread “cAr-rogance”, but arrogance is far from a car driver only phenomenon. It’s horrible in the DC area and, in my opinion, is why this area is the worst. It’s arrogance, no respect or consideration for other people on the roads. Blow through stop signs/lights on any vehicle, texting while driving, hell just call it any kind of distracted driving, parking/driving any where you want..etc to hell with anyone else, you’re king of the road.
Am I throwing stones? Not before I threw a few my way, I was BAD. Aggressive, reckless even at times. Cycling has, in part, helped me accept and take responsibility for how dangerous I was. I’ve had a few different things recently in my life that have totally changed me as a person, cycling has been a big part of that (all for the good, I hope). I don’t hope to force people to change, but hopefully I can help inspire a few others to change. A little like Dirt.
