I’ve been doing it a couple years, trust me – lack of equipment is *NOT* the issue here :) 23 degrees is just stretching my fun level when I commute 25 miles each way

My biggest issue with cold is my toes. I can dress them well, but they still suffer. It’s a crappy circulation in the feet /diabetes thing. That said, that they’re hurting is a good thing, as nerve damage is what usually occurs in diabetics.

consularrider, under settings/forum settings/edit ignore list on the top right.

While I’m certainly an advocate for eye candy of the feminine kind, I think it flies in the face of what (i believe) the purpose of the forum is.

So while the testosterone in me says “more!!” the business side of me says it shouldn’t be. I sure couldn’t put that on my office wall without a visit from HR.

“And yes, there’s always that certain minority who take special pleasure in the looks they get from their coworkers when they get to say “Yes, I did ride in today.””

    That’s ME!!! LOL

That’s part of my route I take most mornings inbound. Jump onto Fairfax from the Custis. then down to the Key bridge.

Starbucks on Fairfax, Starbucks on Clarendon near the Apple store, and the Starbucks on Lynn are where I’ve had collisions. Must be something about that zombie effect of Starbucks that makes them so dangerous :)

So from experience Starbucks = road rash :D

That’s the whole reason I won’t even consider a trike. I don’t have an issue with it on the trails, but the idea of having my head at bumper height isn’t the least bit attractive. I’ve had enough issues with cars that I’m clearly visible to without adding riding a low slung trike that no amount of flags and LED’s is going to put me at a visibility point that’s at or above the vehicle near me.

Don’t get me wrong – I think a trike would be a hoot to ride; but just not in a location that’s already known for being a veritable kill zone.

The W&O was fantastic today between Vienna and Sterling. Clear, sunny and very few pedestrians or cyclists.

Was beautiful this morning from Rt 28 all the way to DC. Cold at 3:30am, but refreshing. They’re in the midst of paving through Reston by the look of it, clearly being done by the lowest bidder… LOL. Can’t complain though, the stretch between Wiehle and the golf course was getting somewhat iffy and anything is better.

Nice was getting to work back from vacation and seeing the nice new beautiful bike lane down 15th street.

THanks CCrew. I ended up buying the Apex group as my c-mas gift to myself. I’m still waiting on shifters but once that gets here I’ll be building it up.

Also – welcome to the forum. Long time since we’ve talked. I’m still riding in to Courthouse – although not as early as you ; )

    Jimmy?

Yeah, I don’t ride into Courthouse anymore unfortunately. I get to tough it out across the Key bridge and down M Street now :(

Might want to take a look at the Gemini lights.
    http://gemini-lights.com/

Basically the Magicshine in a UL listed package without the associated battery recall.

I run Dinotte’s, but they’re substantially more than your stated pricing. Pretty much a standard that others are judged by. I think they come with a zombie killing certification too, they sure do piss off the ninja joggers! :)

I rode the W&OD and Custis this morning and they were fine. A few small puddles had frozen over, but they were easy to see and avoid. It looked like they were already melting and might be gone completely within a day or two, if temps rise during the daylight hours.

Thanks Liz. Back from vacation Wednesday am, so I’ll be out there dodging deer at 3:30 am Wednesday morning!

Critical Mass or something like it could improve bicycle awareness if it is well organized with marshals, sanctioned, etc… The problem with the one here in DC is that it is not.

It’s pretty much the same as DC everywhere if you google others. Heck, the famous NY Cop knocking the guy off a bike was a CM ride there.

While it has it’s roots in some genuinely well meaning thought the reality is it attracts more of the ones you’d want at an event so that you could have the real event somewhere else! :)

Be sure you have the requisite aerobelly, beard and engineering degree documentation before proceeding :)

One I didn’t see listed was Difficult Run. Not very technical, but a nice long ride (25mi total, 12 out and then back), and if you’re car free easily accessible via bus out of WFC Metro. You can pick it up out of Reston and ride all the way out to the Potomac.

Bit of background at that link. Hope that helps.

I knew the C&O Canal trail was there, and that it went all the way from Cumberland Md. to Georgetown, about 180 miles. .

Little tidbit of info. The C&O ends into the Great Allegheny Passage trail in Cumberland and as a result you can actually ride from Georgetown to Pittsburgh (345 miles). Son and I have done it on two occasions now.

So when you make that turn on 41st you’re just getting started :)

Pretty much why they call them “Massholes” :)

Critical Mass has done more to set back cycling advocacy than anything else I can think of.
