When I first moved to Arlington, years ago, I often drove over the Chain Bridge to Canal Road in D.C. I knew the C&O Canal trail was there, and that it went all the way from Cumberland Md. to Georgetown, about 180 miles. But looking at Glebe Road through the car windshield, I would not have wanted to bike the last half mile or so to get to the bridge from Arlington. It’s narrow, steep and winding, and there’s a lot of fast-moving car traffic. I didn’t realize this cut-through was there: You turn right onto Old Glebe Road, cross Glebe, left on Randolph, and right on a paved path to a sidewalk that goes across the bridge and down to the trail. The attached map calls the path “41st St. N.,” but I remember it being just a little path — at least part of it.
