Naa, he’s on the bike because of DUI’s and he’s an illegal alien.

Which bike did you put the new 105 on?
.The Mrs bought me a Salsa Vaya frame for Xmas, and approval to buy what it needed:) Here it is in roughed in form before the stem got flipped and the tires got swapped
I wanted a steel frame tourer that would be good on things like the GAP/C&O, etc and insisted on discs and had been eyeing the Vaya and the Soma Doublecross DC for a bit. She said she had a hard time locating anyone that had one in stock..
Looking at racks now, probably going Tubus front and back but I’m not in a total rush because I have a Bob trailer.

I hope someone from WABA reads this and then asks drivers to sign a pledge to drive responsibly. Maybe they can team up with AAA.
Oh, I’m sorry, but this is laughable. It’s not going to stop anything like what happened to the OP.
What someone should do is start petitioning MVA’s or lawmakers across the country to make the law portion of a drivers license mandatory every X renewals. And then be sure there’s a portion of the law test that addresses the laws pertaining to other items they may encounter.. like cyclists or god forbid even pedestrians. Make the test adaptive so that when answer “X” fails it drills in deeper.
Getting people to sign a pledge will only garner the signatures of the people that care to begin with. When Bubba can’t get his license renewed because he can’t comprehend that a cyclist has the same rights as him it’ll sink in. I’m sorry, but it needs to be mandatory. It’s not even touched on in drivers ed – I asked both my kids and they said “never”.

ParticipantLooks great! Don’t you just love the new under the tape cabling? The 5700 series 105 I just build with was sweet.
What size cassette?

I rode it from Falls Church to Reston and back today. Not bad at all but I was on a MTB. The trail is 95% clear. There are a few spots with a very thin layer of snow. I’m not commuting in tomorrow but if I were I’d probably opt for the knobbie’s, but I’m rather risk averse.
Thanks everyone!. I’ll take the Salsa then, has 38mm cross tires on it 25 miles is tough on my MTB with Nevegals on it. I’m expecting the usual villians up near Buckthorn and between Cedar Lane and Gallows (Does that stretch EVER dry?)
I’ll jump on in the morning and let everyone know what I find.

Just asking. Last I checked riding without a helmet was legal in DC. So why would there be a liability issue, if that’s the reason?
I was planning to go to the New Year’s Resolution Ride tomorrow, but seems I’m not allowed without a helmet.

http://www.dccycling.blogspot.comBill, not speaking for WABA, but in my experience with organizing events you have to carry liability insurance and it’s more than likely the helmet requirement is an offshoot of the insurance underwriting. Lower the (perceived) risk on the part of the insurance company the lower the premium. If it saves WABA money that they can put to other causes I can live with it.
I have to carry a $1m bond on one of my teams just to get access to a building..

I have a Trek that I can say the same thing about. I hear there’s a 12 step program for it… I’d never make the first 10 days!

What about businesses that allow their trucks to block bike lanes while they load/un-load? Do they have any responsibility toward this, or does it rest solely with the truck driver? What if it’s a chronic problem?
Really depends on the organization and the enforcement. I know from friends that work there that UPS considers the tickets that result a normal cost of doing business, but I’d like to think that faced with the option of a picture on the front page of some newspaper or website it would garner some change in policy. Ultimately it’s a DC traffic enforcement issue to begin with.

ParticipantNot a moderator, just a user with an alternate opinion.
When I look at the bottom of the page, I see a logo for Arlington County Commuter Services. Subsequently I assume that this is a site run either by a government or quasi-government organization. I expect as a user a bit less freedom, a lot more oversight, and less shades of grey than you’d see in most public forums. The picture thread and cursing? Put it to a litmus test. Does it belong in a government office, or most businesses? I know mine it would get you a discussion with HR and possibly even shown to the door. Why should it be different here?
People seem to think in this day and age that the anonymity of the internet excuses them from polite behavior. Would you waltz through your office ranting about the “f’ing cafeteria” or discussing the hot admin that the new director got? I’d like to think not. Better yet, while Amuzing, would you think that a meeting of the Arlington County Govt that carried on this way would be something that would make you glad you voted?
I don’t think I’ve seen any admin or moderator here say that you can’t have a spirited discussion. I’ve just seen that that there are expectation of limits. I for one don’t have a problem with it. And I sure didn’t sign up because there was a thread with hot chicks in it.
Now, that said,.. I have one for the admins..
Did a whois on the domain name to see who it belonged to. You realize it’s owned by a hosting company and not the county? Might want to change that as it means you don’t technically own the name, but that may be your desire in the event of litigation.

ParticipantYikes. Glad you’re ok. That’s the most important of all. And far from condemning you, I think you handled it fine. Classic case about drivers thinking surrounding themselves in a ton or so of steel makes them superior.

CCrew, would the chemical toe warmers (brand names are Grabbers, Toastitoes, etc.) be okay for you? I use those on the coldest days and my toes don’t complain so much.
I don’t honestly know, I haven’t tried them.
One of the biggest problems with being diabetic is a thing called peripheral neuropathy. You essentially start to lose nerve endings in hands and feet. As a result, they’re particularly adamant about things like Toasti-Toes, and foot baths, Epsom Salts, being no-no’s. I assume that it’s because as those endings start to die off you could put your extremities in boiling water and not feel it until the skin peels. Heck, as much as my feet hurt when cold I questioned the Dr if it was possible that I was going hyper-sensitive, and was told that does happen.
Basically what I try to do is just use common sense. Dress like you think you should but sometimes you honestly have to slug it out. It’s not the 10-20-40 minutes that gets me, it’s about an hour in that it starts to hurt.
I change out of bike shoes into regular and have a shower at the office, so can warm up pretty quickly. Then I’m usually fine.CCrew

You’re riding Leesburg to Arlington? I met someone along Custis and W&OD before the holidays who was doing that ride. I don’t remember what we discussed.
Depending on how froggy I feel on any given day, I ride from Ashburn/Herndon/Reston to downtown not far from Dupont Circle. Minimum is 22 one way, if I park out by Ashburn closer to 30. Minimum is Reston.
I live in Winchester, so part of the commute is bike on car, since door to door the commute is 84 miles.
Like you, toes are my weak link.

Yeah, the mail person got a polite piece of my mind too since I had to swerve into traffic.
