Out of curiosity, L and what? I’m thinking we’re covering much of the same ground.

I’ve switched to using a much more powerful headlight so that I can see other trail users. Unfortunately this is blinding to people who are coming toward me. I shield them from it as much as I can (slowing way down and covering the light when I can). It isn’t an ideal solution though.

But you have to do exactly that due to the ninja joggers, and even the occasional ninja cyclist. Big thanks for doing what you’ve done, but I’ll opt for my 1200+ lumens to incinerate them in my path as needed. Rarely a ride goes by that I don’t encounter at least one.

Before that gets misconstrued though, I’ll add that I palm my lights for oncoming traffic..

Sounds like a common tale on the W&OD trail by people like Brett, too fast and probably little regard for others. I can’t take someone serious about telling pedestrians to be more careful when they aren’t careful.

I don’t see nor did I take Brett’s post regarding his time trial ride home as the fact that he was running over pedestrians during the ride, nor did he describe near misses. I think you’re taking a thread title that was meant a bit tongue in cheek as a dissertation on his cycling style. I never got that.

Sorry, but on the best of days there’s also always some jogger or walker that’s wandering down the W&OD earbuds firmly implanted thinking because they’re a pedestrian the trail is theirs. It is a MUP… In the truest sense of the acronym – Multi Use Path. While they may be at the top of the pecking order for right of way I think asking them to exert a modicum of common sense is not a reach which is what Brett did.

I’m not saying that there aren’t some cyclists as you describe that treat the W&OD as if it’s their personal training track.. there are. They give us all a bad name. But I think singling out Brett because of the title of a thread is a bit of a reach, don’t you think?

BikeWashington has something on this: http://bikewashington.org/routes/dc2balt/index.htm

Disclaimer: I’ve never tried it, and don’t know that area at all, but it might be worth looking at….

I grew up in that area and still have family there. Looking at the cue sheet that route’s doable. There’s honestly no really good way. Anything that keeps you off Route 1 as much as possible is a good thing.

If you use the Custis Trail and go over the Memorial Bridge, then cruise down the mall, the length I get from BikeToaster is about 14.5 miles. The Custis Trail can be fairly hilly between Ballston and the river, though. I built the route using a starting point of Cedar Lane at the W&OD trail and adding incremental course points along the way.

Yeah, I’m with Will on this one which is why I originally said to plug it in where it crosses at the Key Bridge. Haven’t mapped it but kept going “huh?” at the people saying take 4 Mile Run. I can’t fathom how that would be faster as it doglegs way south of where you need to be and has you coming back up the MVT past Reagan National..

Custis is worse coming home as far as the hills are concerned. Optionally you can ditch the Custis at Veitch and take the Wilson to Fairfax bike lanes to pick up the trail again at the Glebe/Fairfax intersection (by CACI). That leaves the remaining Custis pretty much all downhill.

My city tires are Michelin Krylion Carbon in 700×23 – I’ve had one flat in ~2,500 miles I’ve had them on and that’s riding almost all on city streets in the District and Arlington. Plus they have red stripes which makes my bike faster.

I’ve had similar luck with mine. They replaced Continental Ultra Race’s which were flat magnets.

I wonder if it’ll really take an hour and 38 minutes each way. Time to do some back to back spinning to get in shape…

I’d say the potential is there, yes. Not like a 16mi ride on the W&OD, there’s traffic and everything else to contend with

Ahh, sounds like the great Starbucks death zone. I’m with Mark, I’m usually playing in traffic there – got right hooked by a Mini turning into that garage across from Whole Foods.

Paekwon, sorry to hear it.. heal well and quickly!

My office is on 15th. It’s interesting to watch the confusion that occurs. It’s definitely counter-intuitive.

It’s two way where I am, I see most of the northbound riders still using the street vs the cycletrack.

Easiest to go to Google Maps, plug in the spot where the Custis crosses at the Key Bridge, plug in the Capitol as the destination. Pretty much runs you across the Memorial Bridge right down the mall. Taking 395 is a big dogleg out of the way

I’d volunteer, but I work closer to the White House than the Capitol, and also go inbound about 4:45- 5am through that area. You can ride like a drunk down the middle of M street that time of the morning :)

    MM 11? Near Cedar Lane?

Not bad out. Reston to NW inbound, some small ice patches near Old Reston, then pretty much clear all the way to just before Cedar Lane. The typical spots near the pavilion between Cedar and Gallows (does that EVER dry?) and then clear the rest of the way in.

Wind’s wierd this morning.. It’ll come from one direction and you compensate then it’s coming from 180 degrees opposite. Key Bridge was fun as a result..

Hey, to ride is to ride. The numbers are all just superficial.

Definitely! I commend you though. Those 35 degree days with it spitting rain I don’t hold high on the “pleasure” list. Nor the 40+ mph gusts today.

I probably have you all on mileage, but I’m not calling it a fail if I drive or metro so I don’t have that unbroken streak. I ride most days though, but have one of those erratic schedules… Like having to be in the office at 2am yesterday erratic.

Put the magnet on the 180 opposite of the valve stem. Since the valve stem will usually find “bottom” with the bike on a stand it’ll slightly offset it somewhat.

You’ll never notice it and it’s no issue at all really, but it soothes the OCD in us :)
