Can anyone explain whether it’s assault when a motorist uses a vehicle to threaten cyclists or pedestrians?

Without more specifics the answer is “quite possibly”. If a cop didn’t see it however you have to go before a magistrate to press charges, and it’s up to them what they’ll charge with.

Fortunately the guys with machine guns will most likely thwart that type of vagrant activity. :)

Pfft. You assume they trust them with bullets :)

Mine tried to say I can’t have my bike in my office. It lasted about an hour and a half. That was a fun day. :)

I’d tend to agree with the others. Ignore it until there’s another pass at enforcing it, easy to say you missed the memo. If it’s directed at you I’m sure that will happen fairly quickly.

Cyclists have to realize that they have a bad rap–that I don’t think is deserved, but we must be ambassadors until society catches up. The disdain that drivers have toward us is really scary.

I don’t know that it’s a bad rap. There seem to be a large number of testosterone fueled idiots out there, even on the W&OD. I’ve had some of those tools come by me within mere inches without the slightest peep. It’s getting so anymore the ones that announce a pass are the rare breed. Don’t even get me started on the ones that ride three abreast or pass in the oncoming “side”

Heck, they annoy me and I’m a fellow cyclist. I can understand how drivers get a bad taste when that behavior is carried to the street.

Used road bikes can be a risky (and potentially expensive) purchase for the person unfamiliar with what to look for from a mechanical standpoint. I usually recommend an inexpensive hybrid from an established bike shop that will stand behind it and offer adjustments at least until the rider feels comfortable doing it themselves. From there it’s up to the rider if they want to graduate to something else.

Oh, and it’s the second day that’s the hardest.. when you’re still sore from the first one :)

Just a thought that might be of value for all here?

Liason with companies as to how to best implement the bike commuting tax credit. Seems as though it’s hard to get any buy-in from HR or accounting folks since for the most part it affects such a small subset of their employee base.

Wait, they’re putting the meters back IN the cycletrack?

Yup. According to the contractor the intention is to make the right hand lane parking, and you have to walk across the cycletrack to feed the meter. That’s an accident waiting to happen.

So why do you want to come here when you have what I’d consider to be the best part of the GAP trail where you are? Had to ask.

I’d offer, but I’m waaay out of DC from where you want to be.

I know someone that has one. They’re every bit as loud as a car horn.

Drawbacks he said are they don’t work as well when it’s really cold out and they don’t last for a lot of blasts.

I can think of a lot of W&OD joggers I’d like to use it on…. ya know the ones in the middle of the trail with earbuds in. :P

Is there anything about your bike or your attire that would draw official attention? I’m sure there is not, but am curious.

    Safe riding,

Oh, heck no. Unless seeing a middle aged white guy makes one suspect :) Herndon maybe it would….. LOL

Seriously though. I’m 54 years old, dressed in cycling attire, ie: highly reflectorized on clothing, ankle bands, messenger bag. Run high powered lights, and generally am TRYING to be seen rather than being in stealth mode. I can’t figure it out either.

    Hello —

I work at 18th & L. I cross Key Bridge, right on M Street to Pennsylvania, then left on L Street. If anyone has a great idea for negotiating (or avoiding) that difficult turn, I’m all ears.

I think some of you hit the trail significantly earlier than I do. If you ever do a late shift, maybe we do cross paths.

    Liz

Hmm. 15th between L&M here, so we’re covering a lot of the same ground. Agreed though, I’m in early and out early most days. “Most” being the operative word here, as my job pretty much has me by an electronic leash 24×7 with no hesitation yanking it.. :(

And same route too… Haven’t successfully found a better one. I particularly hate M on the return trip.
