ParticipantDon, not JeffC, but something to check. Most newer wheels are 130 or 135mm hub width. A 1966 is of the era where usually the widest was in the 120mm range. Dunno if the stays can be widened on the bike you have, but may want to check the width of your dropouts before rushing into a purchase.
That said you may well have done it, in which case just ignore me

My on-line police report was approved.
I love being validated.
Yes, they have a description of you from the report, and a picture of the getaway vehicle above. Your days as a free man are numbered!

ParticipantIs it just me, or can others actually appreciate the art form of graffiti? Not so much this one, but some of it looks pretty cool IMHO

It sounds like a BikeArlington or WABA reflective pant strap is just what you need. Now I wonder where you can get one of those….
Way I heard, it was Blacknell’s first order of business to drive to each persons house and deliver them a la Santa. Was that wrong?

ParticipantErr, bad form right out of the gate. Supposed to take bikes on the elevator through Metro stations, not on the escalator :p

ParticipantThere’s also the C&O canal. It s about on your long side of 50 miles, but out, spend the night in Harpers Ferry and browse the town, then back makes for a nice trip also.
I’ll second KLizotte’s sentiment on supplying us some more bike and riding style info then the good folks here can home in on what’s probably most appropriate.
Great thought for a gift.

when a carefully spent $15 and 10 minutes or so of work gets me a brand new chain.
I want to know where you’re buying your chains for $15!!
Keep in mind people that wiping the outside of your chain with a rag to clean it isn’t really making much happy but you. Chain wear (sometimes referred to as stretch) is a result of wear on the pins/inside the rollers of the chain causing the chain to lengthen, which wears out the chain and any associated gearing. Wiping the outside does really nothing to flush out that grit, you’re looking for agitation or submersion to get it out.
Like DSalovesh I replace my chains more often than any wear indicator says they’re worn, I run KMC or Ultegra 10 speed chains though and am looking for the magical $15 one!

ParticipantNoticed this morning that we not only had the wall, but they extra skinnied it with a row of cones against the wall.

As someone else who normally gets to work no later than 3:45 am, I’ll toss in that it’s usually a very quiet and peaceful ride. (Except for yesterday, when someone was burning down southwest D.C.)
Agreed. I can’t think of too many other times you can pretty much ride down the middle of M Street in Georgetown and not see a car.

Whoa. I only *drive* about 2,500-3,000 miles a year.
I’m flabbergasted that you:
1) Get to work at 3:45 am. Note: I don’t usually go to bed till 1:00 am.
2) Bike to work and still manage to arrive at 3:45.
3) Ride daily distances that I only see on the *weekends* during the warm weather months. You should figure out how many incremental calories you’ve burned (that is, above what you would have burned taking metro or driving in).
Can you eat whatever the heck you want, all the time?!
I eat like a horse, and I’ve lost 50lbs in 4 years. I’m also type 2 diabetic, and given the riding I don’t have to take meds although I do have to closely watch it still.
I wish I only drove 2-3 k a year! Typical Day:
Up at 12:15, shower, dress, load bike on car.
Leave house 1:00 am. Stop at 7-11 for coffee
Drive 55 miles from house to Reston Park & Ride (Sunset Hills) arrive 2:00-2:15am
Bike from Reston to Downtown. Arrive work usually 3:30-3:45am (22 miles)
Leave work 2:00’ish if possible, Ride back to Reston. Arrive 3:30’ish
Bike on car, 55 miles home. Arrive by 5 at latest usually. Dinner, spend time awake, in bed 8’ish but usually laterLather, rinse and repeat
To give you an idea, my 2007 car now has 150k miles on it

ParticipantYou know, anyone here that’s even commuting a small part of the time deserves kudos. We’re a different breed for sure than the majority of DC commuters for sure. I can’t help but think of Wall-E sometimes when I metro in or even pass cars in traffic!

Congratulations! What has been the highlight of this year’s commuting?
I would have to say that it’s some of the people I’ve met. Lots of good people that I wouldn’t have had the pleasure of their acquaintance were it not for the bike. Yourself certainly included.
Mileage is a subjective number, at 46 miles a day it’s not hard to run the numbers up. Thanks everyone for the congrats though.
The nice weather days that I get the crazy notion to park in Purcellville or Leesburg and ride to downtown I really do in retrospect question my sanity though. Or maybe days like this morning when I get on the bike @ 24 degrees!
December 11, 2011 at 8:29 pm in reply to: Long time lurker, first post – Blew a road tire question (pic) #933542CCrew
ParticipantIve had crap luck with the Krylions, the’ve tended to dry and crack on me.
Road tire tire of choice for me is the GP4000S Continental in a clincher or Continental sprinter’s on my tubular carbons.
Continental Ultra Race’s are nice and fast, but no durability for flats.
One question though.. Where are you going to attach the Incredibell to on the wife?
