ParticipantThe Holmes Run Trail also suffers from way too much traffic. Police cars travel on the trail between Eisenhower and South Jenkins, A small trash truck goes along the trail emptying the trash cans and maintenance trucks travel along the trail (including the one’s below, clearing the trail of ice). Yesterday, as a change of pace, an officer on a motorcycle came through.
There are a couple of stretches along the trail where the asphalt is clearly deteriorating under the weight of the vehicles and they routinely kick up gravel onto the trail. That of course requires a crew in a truck to come along and clean up the gravel.

ParticipantAnother good source of information is http://linkup.shaw-weil.com. The authors provide useful information about riding the GAP and C&O Canal.
There is also a trail guide available called the Trail Book. You can get if from Amazon or from the Great Allegheny Passage Trail Store

Yesterday on my commute home I was shocked to see a fox searching for food in broad daylight (about 4:00 pm) by the Jefferson Memorial.

Nice photo! My wife sees foxes along the Reflecting Pool during her morning walks, but she has never gotten a photo.

ParticipantIt appears that an early Christmas present in on hand for King Street. The attached letter from Rich Baier to the residents of King Street indicates that
the modified plan is the best plan to achieve the common goals of improving safety and balancing the needs of multiple users of King Street.
He is directing his staff to move forward with the implementation of the plan in the new year.

ParticipantI stop for red lights more than 90% of the time. The exceptions are early in the morning (crossing Duke Street at West Street) or when I know the light won’t change for me (Seminary and Howard). In those instances I do go through a red, it is always after stopping and confirming there is no traffic coming in any direction. At

ParticipantHere are some photos taken at 10:30 this morning. There is lots of activity at this site this morning, there are multiple flagmen directing traffic, including helping bicyclists cross Columbia Pike and Four Mile Run Drive.

ParticipantThis article from Seattle calls riders who don’t dim their lights “bike bullies”.
The author says that it is
the flashing headlights that blind and dazzle most — and provoke the most heated debates on the bike blogs.
Another writer from Seattle thinks that it is a bit “harsh” to call them bullies. He suggests that education, including signs along trails might be a good start to the problem

Out of curiosity, are there signs for those coming onto the trail from Route 1, as one would do if they came up Commonwealth Avenue from Del Ray and tried to get onto Four Mile Run on the Arlington side?
As of this morning, there are still no signs along Route 1

ParticipantThe Alexandria Traffic and Parking Board met on Monday evening. Unfortunately, the board decided to push a decision for two months. Articles about the board’s deferral of any action can be found at:

ParticipantI think that this is one of the better coordinated detours for bicyclists that I can remember. We have been given ample warning that the detour was happening and a solution was put in place before construction was started. It would be nice if actual detour signs are added along the detour route and that signs are placed at all of the entry points to this section of the trail.
The on-going project at Columbia Pike and the Four Mile Run Trail is a recent example of a poorly executed project impacting pedestrians and bicyclists.

To use the ramp, you will need to slightly tilt your bike to clear the metal

ParticipantSigns were posted eastbound on the Four Mile Run Trail just before the trail splits to go under the bridges and at the top of the new stairs and ramp. I didn’t notice any signs as you come off of the Mount Vernon trail.
