ParticipantHello Fellow Shiner Niners,
My name is Cathy and I live in Fairfax. This is my 5th year doing Freezing Saddles and my first year to sponsor a Pointless Prize. I joined Freezing Saddles to help provide me a little nudge to get out and ride my bike in the winter months. Little did I know that I was going to meet this network of wonderful people that enjoy the outdoors and like to explore the world by bike. I have had a lot of fun and have traveled to and learned about a lot of interesting places around the DMV due to my bikey friends. My bikey friends have also taken me on journeys outside the DMV. There is so much to see and you see so much more by bike (than car).
I am sponsoring ParkFinder. The idea came about when I was looking at an article about interesting places to hike in NOVA. I was not familiar with with one of the parks mentioned in the article so I looked it up on a map to determine its location and how to get to the park. In mapping out a route the light bulb went off in my head and a Pointless Prize was born. For me it is more fun to bike somewhere when I have a destination in mind or a task to complete. If you are not familiar with the Pointless Prizes check out the thread under Freezing Saddles. There is a game for everyone.
I am looking forward to meeting more of our team mates and following everyone on Strava. Have fun and ride on…….

ParticipantThere have been some questions on the ParkFinder pointless prize. I have amended the criteria to clarify and address the issues that were raised. Please amend your Strava submission accordingly.
Hope you are having fun searching for parks on your bike travels!!

Do I have to do any specific activity in the park? Or is just a visit sufficient enough? What about multiple parks on a ride?
Usually the only thing I do while on a bike ride at a park is use a port-a-potty, or maybe ride the bike around a trail. Hiking or other activities in bike shoes doesn’t work very well for me.
Good questions. My intent was was really to give people ideas for a destination, find new parks that you may want to return to another day or find a way to get to some of the better known parks by bicycle. As such, you do not need to do any specific activity at the park except to take a picture of the park sign with your bike in the picture.
Regarding getting credit for going to multiple parks on a ride I am going to need to consult with the technology folks. I don’t have any issue with visiting multiple parks. I just don’t know what is required to identify and count the ride/park.

ParticipantI have posted a Pointless Prize competition called ParkFinder. You can find the rules here: http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?15839-Pointless-Prize-ParkFinder
I haven’t yet decided on a prize. I am going to use #FS2020ParkFinder in my titles so I can see how many parks I can locate but I will be excluding myself from the competition.
This is my first time sponsoring a Pointless Prize. Who do I need to notify so that #FS2020ParkFinder can be counted? Is there anything else I need to do?

Thank you for volunteering. Please steal our format! If you’re interested in doing some in FABBlandia we will be happy to share all of our documents and know how.
Thank you for your offer, Judd. I will soak it all in and share the knowledge.

ParticipantThanks for posting. This sounds fun! I have signed up for 3 of them. This will be new to me. Maybe I can learn a few things and try to do some in Fairfax County.

Only if you assume no one would ride ~1 mile for anything, which is definitely not the case. The 1-mile rule incentivizes people to take a bike when they may not otherwise, like taking CaBi instead of Metro or a Lyft or whatever. While the 1-mile rule does enable the type of “sleaze” rides to which you are referring, I think you’d be surprised at the number of 1-ish mile rides in FS that are people using bikes to complete everyday tasks.
Sometimes I just need a “kick” to get out the door and on to my bike. The “sleaze” rides have given me incentive to get out and many times I end up riding longer than I planned because I was just having fun. Having that incentive has taught me that I can enjoy riding in “winter weather”.

It’s almost Pi Day, so let’s bike and have pie!
We’ll start at 9:30 a.m. at Livin’ the Pie Life, 2166 N. Glebe Rd. in Arlington. Then we’ll ride to The Pie Gourmet in Vienna, hit Killer E.S.P. in Alexandria, and end at Pie Sisters in Georgetown. The route (http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/1967315459) is about 38 miles, mostly on trails. Social pace (12-15 mph), no drop. Bring a lock and money for all of that delicious pie.
.Yum, yum. It was so much fun last year. I am looking forward to the ride and will meet you in Arlington on Saturday.

Look forward to meeting you and swapping GAP stories. I’ve ridden the GAP about 10 times. I usually go up 1 day and back the next, but I enjoyed the couple times I did it more leisurely and stopped at all the towns along the way. I’m from Rome, NY which at one time boasted of the Erie Canal Village (now closed in disrepair). I often bike that 20 miles segment of the Erie Canal when visiting my mother.
I really enjoyed stopping in the towns along the GAP and checking out all of the bike themed art work along the trail and in the towns. The Erie Canal ride was also very pretty and I enjoyed learning the history along the way. From a history perspective my favorite stop was Seneca Falls. The NPS kept their facility open late for the riders to take tours. Rome is actually one of the overnight spots along the way. Someday I would like to do the entire tour. We traveled from Buffalo to Syracuse with the group and then departed to head to the Pittsburgh for my husband’s family reunion.
