Has anyone taken an ebike on a MARC train? A Reddit user is reporting that MARC has started barring his/her ebike after a year of allowing it on, apparently citing the rule against motorized vehicles on trains. https://www.reddit.com/r/ebikes/comments/av2hkp/ebikes_banned_from_commuter_train/

Ebikes can be a major game changer with getting people out of cars and onto trails whether for commuting or recreational travel. I personally never considered commuting on a conventional bike due to the need to change clothes at work in the summer, but my ebike allows me to get to work in my shirt and tie and plop straight into the old office cube. As a side benefit, I’ve (re)discovered the joy of riding and have been finding excuses to get out on the bike.

If there were some ban on ebikes on trails, I never would have gotten on a bike. Instead, I’m plumbing Alexandria Small Area Plans and showing up to local government hearings on infrastructure because I suddenly care a lot about good bike facilities in this region. So I say bring on the ebikes because they represent a rising tide that will lift all boats around here.

I don’t agree that the e-bike population is heavily older, less fit folks or folks schlepping kids. Most the e-bikes I see while commuting (and even during recreational times) are healthy aged individuals using a vehicle that is faster than a regular bike and doing so to save time/energy on their trip.

I am one of those of who you speak, commuting on an e-bike primarily using the region’s trails as a fit young person. I’m curious whether you think that e-bikes should be allowed on trails and whether that opinion has anything to do with the e-bike user’s motivation for using the trail. Perhaps I’ve got the wrong idea from your post, but it seems wrong-headed and judgmental to distinguish between “legitimate” and “illegitimate” use of an e-bike on a trail, with the elderly and kid-hauling on one side and young and healthy on the other.

I’m asking because as a regular e-bike rider that uses MUPs daily as part of my commute, I acknowledge that e-bikes are sometimes misused on bike trails whether from traveling too fast for conditions or lack of etiquette, or both. I’ve seen it happen, but surely there’s a sensible way for e-bikes to co-exist with other users. Already, MUPs are shared by many users whose motivations are already at odds, case in point hardcore time trailers versus parents-with-strollers (or really, everyone else on the trail). What’s the difference with e-bikes?

Midday ride from DC -> Alexandria was uneventful. The 14th St. bridge is plowed (I rode behind the machine and gave the guy a thumbs up at MVT), and MVT had nice squeaky snow ~1″ deep. Potomac Yard Trail was a bit dicier with packed rough patches, but was salted and clear between Braddock & Old Town Metro.

Squeaky snow all the way in from Alexandria today. Potomac Yard Trail -> MVT was good to go. The only janky experience I had was turning too sharply onto a plowed road.

Took my bike in today from Eisenhower to L’Enfant in an effort to allow the MVT to thaw. No major issues!

That’s an electric motorcycle – it doesn’t even have pedals. Unless Harley Davidson has come full circle and is making bicycles again, 100 years later.

Has anyone taken their bike on the metro since this new rule went into effect? I’m trying to work up the nerve to do it myself.

Sounds like TwoWheels is doing something wrong!

I had the pleasure of drafting a guy yesterday who was wearing jeans and loafers on the W&OD and cruising at 25mph, until he turned off just before Vienna. That’s a nice drafting speed; I love it when I can benefit from all that free wattage too.

I’ve been thinking of putting a “Drafting Welcome” sign on my back on my daily e-bike commute. Would that go over well do you think?

Is it allowed? Asking for a friend. :0)

Perhaps a better inquiry is whether the rider operates it safely on the trail? :)
