Thanks for getting our team Strava started! I just joined the team. My name is Bryan, so you should hopefully see me on there now

A few of us managed to make it to happy hour last night, and maybe others came later since I left relatively early. I believe CPTJohnC is team captain. Hopefully the lack of posts on our team thread means everybody else is out riding right now!

I am in Alexandria, and commute into DC quite often other than the occasional day like today when I work from home. I should make it out before the end of the day most likely. Some days I might only manage a sleaze, but will try and get out every day if at all possible. There is a chance I may miss a week or two with travel, but so far my calendar is clear.

I look forward to meeting everybody!

Not an entry for this pointless prize since the picture is from a couple years ago, but I could not help being reminded of this sign I came across during transit at Narita airport:

Sorry I could not make it. Was late at the office and then just rode straight home. I am Bryan and live in the Del Ray area. I have a longer commute now this year with the office having moved to Van Ness so that should help the team a bit. Anyway, I look forward to meeting everybody.

I love this commute ‘cause most of it is pretty and peaceful. But it’s a bit out-of-the-way so you might prefer a more direct route.

A good option for those nice days in spring / autumn when looking to extend my commute a bit.

Good to know. 34th / Reno looked nice on Google Street View, but I guess the reality is a bit different.

I guess the simplest option is often the best, and just take Connecticut. And then 18th-Adams Mill-Harvard-RCP looks like a good way to mix things up a bit.

My office will be moving to Van Ness as well in a couple of Months. Current office is in Foggy Bottom, and like my existing route to Washington Circle so was just planning on building off of that. Alternatively, if much better alternatives then I would consider those as well.

Google route options were not looking that good, and I would prefer to avoid Rock Creek.

This is what I had been thinking after searching roads through Google street view.

    Any comments / preferred alternatives?

Really good commute with one head shaker. Westbound on F there was a car from Massachusetts that kept stopping in the middle of the left lane, with everyone stuck behind them (because the right lane is always blocked by double-parking and deliveries). They’d go forward a bit and then stop again. I finally darted between them and the blockages in the right lane, and when I looked down, the driver and passenger were *both* bent over their smart phones while completely stopped midblock in the left lane with no cars in front of them. I managed to make the lights in the sequence and left everyone else to their fate.

Not sure about this time since you say there was another person in the car, but this seems to be increasingly common with all the Uber drivers trying to locate their passenger to pick up. Driving slow, starting and stopping, and keeping an eye on their phone.

This happened about 8:45 am on the bridge a little past the curve on the VA side. A cyclist heading into DC tried to pass a slow going cyclist and hit oncoming cyclist in opposite lane.

From this it sounds like the fault of the cyclist heading uphill…passing into a blind curve. Though also prudent for VA bound riders to take it easy around this curve, especially if otherwise not able to stay in their lane.

There are a few spots like this in that general area where I see riders going uphill passing into blind curves with no idea whether a fast downhill cyclist is just around the bend: south end of Gravelly Point path by the parking lot, bottom of the North airport bridge, just north of the crystal city spur at the start of that bridge, top of the long decline towards the car ramp from Aviation Circle onto GW Parkway, and a few of those curves as you continue on along the airport parking, and so on as you head south (or on MVT).

There are so many such spots, and with all the blind-curve passes you see going into those spots it is surprising that this does not occur more often.

My commute is pretty short–just to College Park–but an accident here at the midpoint of my commute is pretty scary to think about.

Actually sounds like a relatively long commute if Gravelly Point is just your midpoint going to College Park. ~30 miles each way?

My on-road route alternatives (Pershing, Wilson, Clarendon) haven’t seen a change in behavior and a slight increase in numbers. It does help that opposing cyclists are on the other side of the road.

Most of the time, at least. However, I was surprised this morning by a cyclist coming straight at me going the wrong way right down the middle of my lane on Crystal Dr. Not a good example for the kids…

I see this all the time trying to cross GW Parkway, and elsewhere.

Once when driving along the upper end of 16th St. NW I had stopped for a cyclist to cross, but it was so bad with cars continuing to pass in the other lane that I eventually decided to move my car sideways to block both lanes… You can only imagine all the car horns as a result, which made it all the more enjoyable as the cyclist was finally able to cross.

This is why I usually hug the center line on the MVT. It usually dissuades the impatient from trying to pull dangerous passes.

I have done this as well in the past. And then one day a guy tried to pass on my right because there was oncoming traffic to the left…
