Anyone have any idea what it would cost to ship our Xtracycle Edgerunner across the country? Don’t worry, we’re not leaving the area. But perhaps an extended vacation on the West coast…
My theoretical strategy for this (in an international context) is to try to find someone who already has one (in my case: a big dummy) at/near the destination and bribe them to let me use theirs…so that’s one option to consider…
Spurious and potentially unuseful data point: when I received my mail order (I lucked out: $1700 delivered) Big Dummy Complete, it arrived partially built by surly: no pedals (of course) and fork uncut and uninstalled. Wheels may have not been installed in dropouts (can’t remember), headset was only partly installed (pressed cups in place only).
That’s about as far as you’d want to disassemble it in any case (cargo add-ons aside) in order to get it into the narrowest profile possible. One could probably get it into an unbuilt bike shipping box (or two, taped together) at that point. Then price out the transport options.
[UPS also mistakenly mis-delivered it to Revolution Cycles in Clarendon, which is understandable, since I lived on the same block at the time. Hilarity ensued.]

I spent so much time trying to decide how to deliver that joke I got interrupted by a work issue…

Indeed. When travelling I use locking skewers for the bikes on the roof…but I also lock them with a u-lock and cable (properly placed/protected so as to not bounce around and damage the bike/roof).

ParticipantJust an update: Pete is ordering me a new crankarm+bolt. I really really torqued the replacement bolt hard about 75 miles ago (braced and stomped hard) and…so far…it’s holding. But still, I’d like to remove the potentially damaged crank arm from the equation and have an expert with a knowledge of the history either properly install the replacement or guide me into doing the same.
Next update: sometime later this week or next week.

ParticipantBeen there, done that.
I have a Kinetic by Kurt gathering dust and a riser ring for it. Might take me a day or two to find the special skewer. Totally available for a long-term loan.
I’m in DC/Shaw, available thursdays/fridays for pickup.
Also sending via email.

ParticipantARHL – the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) also has a Women & Bicycle forum (via Facebook) that might also help in your search: https://www.facebook.com/groups/WomenandBicycles/
Good luck!

ParticipantDC->Herndon late morning, studs:
Rhode Island, M St.: pretty normal.
Key Bridge: oh goodness, the wind, this ride going to be interesting.
Custis: perfect, thank you Arlington!
W&OD: pretty clear until falls church, then started seeing some snow/ice, esp. on the bridges. Cautious. A slow build-up of ice/snow patches the further west I went. There’s a section just east of Reston Town Center which was particularly icy where I bailed to the softer snow to the north of the trail for that segment. Probably would have been fine with the studs, but why risk it?The ride should normally take about 2h20m (cargo bike+cargo). Took about 3h today. Also, the pedal came loose again about 2.5 miles from Herndon, re-torqued it. Might drop by Bikekinetic to talk with Pete if things work out on the way home and he’s still there.

ParticipantA few weeks ago:
You: Woman cycling her road bike eastward up from the Underpass of Eternal Darkness, head down on your side of the trail, grinding up the hill with steadfast determination.
Me: Heavy cyclist riding heavy cargo bike carrying heavy cargo coasting down the hill towards the UoED on my side of the trail at a downhill but reasonable speed for the upcoming left curve…rolling over a serious bump in the trail which created a sound not entirely unlike my bike falling from the sky and landing onto the trail even though the bike continued straight and true [the xtracycle running boards’ loose fit definitely contributes to the sound of a large contraption falling apart, esp. with cargo].
You: Screaming in surprised terror. Like, actual terror. Like inducing an adrenalin response in me upon hearing the scream.
Sorry.
I looked back, concerned I’d surprised you into a crash. But you were still grinding up the hill, just no longer staring at the trail but looking forward. Safe…but your heart must have been pounding pretty hard.
Again, sorry.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. Picked up a set of Schwalbe Winter tires, and they seem to do the trick. But, damn are they heavy.
