The first line of defense is to rely on your mobility. I used to ride through some of the worst neighborhoods in DC back in the early 90’s, when they were much worse than they are now. I would try hard to never come to a complete stop and never let anyone approach too close. I would turn around if I saw anything that set my radar off.
If your feet come out the pedals you’ve either done something wrong or you’re there and the ride’s over.

I’d never heard of pawpaws before. Did a little internet research and came up with this gem of an article about them:
http://www.nwfoodnews.com/2011/10/14/in-awe-of-the-pawpaw/Is it possible to pick some around here in the wild or are they too high up to reach w/o a ladder?
A great thing about pawpaws is that they mostly only fall when they’re ripe. If you see one, shake the tree. If it falls, it’s ripe, or close to it. I’ve found that if I bring them home and put them in a closed tupperware container, they’re ready to eat when the container smells like a watermelon jolly rancher.

Have you considered using the neighborhood streets to the west of Rosslyn and joining the Route 50 trail at the Rhodes Street bridge? Yep. I agree, sorta, so I tweaked it

ParticipantStretch after your ride. Takes away some of the soreness later. I was a 3-4 days a week commuter 15-20 miles round trip. Then I just couldn’t stand Metro anymore. Going to 5 days a week gave me some muscle fatigue, but stretching helped my muscles get used to the extra work.

You: Woman in Black Audi behind me on Union Street in Alexandria this morning.
Me: Following slow pick-up truck (15 mph) and stopping behind him at every stop.
You: Honking furiously at me and pulling up parallel to me on my left and trying to pass me, then riding next to me (in the opposite lane).
Lady, seriously? I can’t go any faster than that truck and neither can you.
4-lane behavior on a 2-lane road.

ParticipantThe more complicated we make our road design, the more confused cops and drivers get.

ParticipantI’d be happy if they just promised to pick up the road diapers at the end of every weekend. Monday a.m. commute was a 2 diaper crit.

OK June, a couple more like this morning and we’re even.
I take it back. What is it about finally getting a great weather day that brings out the asshats? Stupidty and selfishness off the charts from all modes in that evening commute.

ParticipantStop restricting yourself to the bike lane ghetto. If it’s not working; if it’s blocked by elephant cars, if there’s a swarm of pedestrians, if shoalers are jumping the line, get out. Take a regular northbound lane. There’s one going into the intersection and two on the other side. In a gridlock scenario, speeds and lane sizes work in your favor if you stay in the regular through lanes.
I am a Shepherd of Cars. I will jump a light to get in front of a car trying to block the box and prevent them from doing so. If a cowboy wrangles cows, and I wrangle cars, does that actually make me a Carboy?

Floorboards are actually scored because flooring often only has one good side (meaning clear and free of defects and knots), and manufacturers learned long ago that installers suck at picking it.
So they route grooves into the bad side to make it obvious that side goes to the floor.
Lots of folktales and secondary benefits of grooving the underside, but the primary reason is stability.
