ParticipantI think I registered properly. This year, I even got both the expected emails upon submitting the registration form.
Thanks so much

ParticipantHi Jessica,
I am seriously considering this one and might be there to help with the cleanup. I mentioned earlier to my team captain Nadine that “I’m in”, but I blurted this out before my wife had surgery on her arm this past Thursday. It may be wiser for me to stay home and keep an eye on things as I’ve been doing today.
If I can make it, for the cleanup, I’ll be there.
Thanks so much

ParticipantThanks, everyone, for setting me straight. Now to see where Mr. Happy stashes the Calvinball.
Suppose I discover the Calvinball. I know I have to re-stash it within 24 hours. But what should I do with respect to the contents? I see the following possible actions.
- Take them all for myself, replacing them with fresh goodies;
- Add something to the existing contents, and pass them on without taking anything;
- Pass on the existing contents, neither taking anything nor adding anything;
- Take one item from the existing contents, add add an item of equal value to replace it.
Which of the above actions is most acceptable?
Thanks so much

ParticipantSo…here is a confused look from innocent and old me…where are we with the Calvinball now? Has it been re-stashed somewhere?
Thanks so much

Bob, as a firm believer in equal opportunity Calvinballing, if it is not found by tomorrow after work, I will relocate it to MD.
Sarah, thank you so much for thinking of my humble hope! I really appreciate it! I see the Calvinball has been captured. I will await the decision of its possessor. The weekend is close upon us and I’ll try to search for it.
Thanks again, thanks so much for your thoughtfulness!

ParticipantOkay, I’ll give this a whirl. I may need to bribe someone closely related to me into knitting a warm and unusual but tasteful design. I have a strong attraction to “Darn Tough Vermont” brand socks…some of them might be showy enough.
Thanks so much

ParticipantHi Ify,
I feel your pain, I think the process is complicated. With that said, I just live with it, because it is only a few minutes for me to do once a year. Then I can enjoy the good life of just going out there and racking up the winter miles.
One thing I do want to stress is that if you visit these forums a lot you will quickly discover there is a wealth of bicycling knowledge and experience here. Forum participants do a whole range of things bicycling and it is fascinating to read many of the posts. Photos in many posts are real treasures.
Thanks so much

ParticipantPardon my asking, but when does registration begin for 2020?

ParticipantHow About a neon orange ankle band? A band that is long enough to go around ankles protected by winter boots and pants, and with generous amounts of velcro to ensure that the band will stay on the ankle rather than come off.
Thanks so much

ParticipantHi!
I see I’m really late to the discussion thread. Speaking for myself, I recall that last year I didn’t often come close to the mileage cap. I’m fairly indifferent to a cap on miles. I’ve skimmed parts of this thread and find myself agreeing with Steve O: it would be good to get new riders to try out winter bicycling. You can’t do that by tossing out the low or non- performers. I guess I am okay with how teams are created. I live in Greenbelt and as I recall, several of the members of the team I was assigned to lived in Virginia and at least one person was in Baltimore…maybe two? To me, that made it much harder for everyone to meet. Riding to a meeting spot in Virginia would have been a major trip for me, and even more so for the Baltimore participants. On the other hand we did have pretty good communication among team members as a Strava group. I think. Meeting team members is much, much easier if they are local to me…but I still benefit from a more distributed team composition even if I can’t meet them…so no complaints.
I’m stocking up on HotHands, and waiting breathlessly for registration to open.
Thanks so much

ParticipantHi,
I’m Bob Cochran. I’m deaf (meaning I can’t hear), furloughed, and live in Greenbelt. I’ll join the Strava club in a few minutes.
I want to immediately confess that during the recent 2 days of high winds, I dared not bicycle. I hope to end this dreadful failure tomorrow morning — for at least a few miles.
Thanks

ParticipantI always thought Performance was a high-end shop. Too bad it is going.

ParticipantHi, I hope you still have these available. I ordered one a couple days ago using the PayPal link. I realize you might be out of them. If so, keep the money as a thank you for your great work with designing and ordering these.

ParticipantThanks for the suggestions made so far. I can be a bit more specific. Yes, probably a steel frame built for long distance rides. I want the frame built from scratch to my exact measurements. I’ve already decided on a builder and I’ll contact the person soon. I am not interested in long trips to a shop since travel increases the total project cost.
Handlebars: I’ve tried flat bars, with and without bar ends. My hands go numb constantly on rides. So flat bars seem to be a mistake, at least for me. I guess for a custom bicycle I’ll try drop bars. I’m aware that the choice of drop bars or flat bars in turn influences frame geometry.
Gears: some gear option that will let me go cross-country. A transcontinental ride is one of the things I want to do in the next few years, before retiring. I am not interested in going fast. I’m happy if I get there and I want to see things along the way. There’s always that interesting thing I want to stop for and photograph.
Wheels: front wheel must be outfitted with a Schmidt generator. Both wheels and freehub able to take a load and a cross country ride.
I want to be able to use a range of tire sizes. Perhaps I can interchange between 650B and 700C with tires of different widths. I’m willing to do some experimentation. Perhaps switching between 650B and 700C tires on the same frame isn’t possible.
Brakes: hydraulic/disc.
Long ago, I lost much of my sense of balance, but I still do okay. I was relating my balance problem because I thought there might be a frame material out there that helps lend a sense of stability. I can accept steel.
I hope this is a little more specific. (Smile.)
