ParticipantCheers to everyone who came out! I really enjoyed my time tonight. Even though I wasn’t a BAFS17 participant it’s been great meeting the fine folks of this community. I want to share my appreciation for the warm welcome as well.

What time are folks planning to arrive tonight? I’m just chillaxing at home so need motivation to drag my fat @$$ back out.
I’m still working a little while longer I’ll probably arrive 9-ish.

ParticipantLooks like Edelweiss and Komorebi got the sweets on lock. I’ll bring the savory.

Update on the broken 705. Cvcalhoun boxed it all up and sent it to me. Nice little bit of karma as she got some free shipping so no postage.
I was able to clean and resolder the connector in place. Once the connector was back in place and tested I added some epoxy to firm it up. Battery back in, back together and done.
Now the question. what to do with the repowered Garmin 705? I was thinking that it can back to the Original owner as her loaner / backup and if not wanted I can drop it off at Phoenix bikes. Is this something that Phoenix bikes can use? Any other ideas for where it can go?
Had to give a shout out for the repair work and some Hakko love.

ParticipantI’ve infiltrated a few events as a filthy newbie who was late to all this BAFS s̶i̶l̶l̶i̶n̶e̶s̶s̶ majestic pageantry. I’m down to drive and support. Plus Judd is a champion of the people and I owe him pie. Hit me up with snack and drink requests and I’ll see what I can do.

ParticipantI went for a run this evening and part of my route included the W&OD from about Route 7 to the Custis Trail junction. The trails looked quite good and are very runnable/ridable. Bridges are still snowy/icy. I marked a couple of possible trouble spots for tomorrow’s commute on the attached image.
1. This curve coming out of Banneker Park is one that’s fun to take at speed, but there was still some slush and a fairly large puddle as the sun was going down. It’ll be below freezing in the AM, so be cautious.
2. There are some sneaky ice patches lurking in the shade below Patrick Henry.

Did something happen at Cap City?

And generally they started out having shitty service to begin with. Combining having to trip the wait staff to get a beer with having to do a complex set of math and negotiations to pay, it’s just not worth it for me anymore.
So basically, Cap City happened.

Head up to Idylwood. It was slushy but rideable yesterday from Virginia Lane to Citizens’ Bridge, but today it is probably frozen solid lumpy. There was a guy using an ancient lawn tractor to plow the trail in Falls Church City, but he was leaving about an inch of slush which is also probably very exciting today. Suggest Park to Little Falls to Columbia to Van Buren. The part of the W&OD that ArlCo claims as the Custis through Banneker Park was clear.
Lincoln and Little Falls looked great. Westmoreland from 29 to Sycamore was also in good shape.

Many thanks go out to komorebi and LeprosyStudyGroup for helping to clear these well-used paths. I’m tired (and will be very sore in the morning), but it was fun!
First test of the new path over the bridge

ParticipantUpdate: I’m tapping out. Wind is getting nasty and I can’t feel my hands. I was hoping to at least hit Little Falls/Bikenetic. I did what I could from the Route 7 bridge to the intersection of Great Falls St. My goal was to expose asphalt so hopefully enough will melt away and there’ll be minimal ice. That said, drainage in this area of the W&OD is pretty poor and I saw some pooling. Use caution.
Commuters, fellow riders, safe travels. CX racers, sorry for ruining your fun.
P.S. I also saw this well-meaning dude using his tractor to clear the other side of the trail. His buddy was on a mini-bike. Unfortunately the plow wasn’t making clean contact, so he ended up sort of smoothing out the snow. At least there won’t be ice ruts?

For anyone interested, I plan on heading over to that spot this evening to do some shoveling. My goal is to clear as much of a usable path between the Humpback Bridge and the 14th St Bridge as possible while the temperatures are still above freezing. I will bring my trailer with a shovel, an ice breaker, and 2 deck-style push brooms. I should be there by 6 and plan to stay for at least 2 hours. Hope to see some of you there!
You’re an inspiration! I can report the W&OD in the city of Falls Church SUCKS. I’m doing what I can but it’s slow going. I’ve got a lane going from the bridge over Route 7 to West St so far. If anyone’s local, feel free to chip in.

ParticipantYup, props to those who rode, but teleworking and drinking pourover with a cat on my lap works for me! I really should pick up some studded tires and decent platform pedals for a future winter that isn’t this mild though.
