In a couple of months a new route will open. Continue on the MV highway to US 1. Go straight onto Mulligan Road which will go all the way to Telegraph. Left on Telegraph all the way to US 1
I’ve biked Mulligan Rd already (on the weekend when there’s no construction going on) and it’s sweet.

ParticipantSorry for your loss. I frequent that area too, will keep a lookout. Did you leave it briefly unattended or was your lock cut?

ParticipantBack in my day, if anyone tried to bike up the east side of the Anacostia River between the Douglas bridge and Benning Road…they were never seen again.

…I notice the jaywalking pedestrians while I’m cycling. Many will step out into the road in the middle of a block and expect all car drivers and cyclists to stop suddenly. Yes, pedestrians have right of way in a crosswalk and everyone should avoid an accident when possible. But it’s very difficult when someone steps out right in front of you while jaywalking. I haven’t run into anyone yet, but I’ve had a few near misses in this category too, and not because I was trying to run anyone down.
Yep, I’ve experienced this a lot on the L St. bike lane lately. I’ll see a ped approaching from the left, perpendicular to the lane, head down of course, engrossed in their handheld ED. They’re not thinking about crossing the street yet without looking up, but they don’t even think twice about stepping off the curb to get in position to cross without so much as a side-ward glance. I’ve got a bell but they don’t seem to react to it. So now when I see them coming I just yell loudly, “Look UP!!” It’s a problem.

ParticipantI’ve only been cycling about eight years…started taking the MVT from the trail head to the Pentagon…not very long ago but compared to the activity I see now, long enough to say, “I was cycling in DC metro before cycling was cool…”

Heading south from 14th St. Bridge towards the airpart yesterday…for a moment, the smell of bar-b-que was really nice…and then it was sewage bar-b-que. And that was a couple hundred yards up the river from the porta-potties, so I stopped using my nose. The combination of good food smell plus…that…made it so much worse.
Well that explains all the close calls I’ve had over there…they stumble out of the porta-john semi-asphyxiated and then stumble onto the trail without so much as a sideward glance first.

Something like this?

Now that would be the perfect gift for the cyclist that has everything.

Maybe we’re chosen and predestined to be cyclists…

ParticipantToday I explored both sides of the Anacostia, don’t know if it’s well known or not but you can loop both sides of the river between the Douglas Bridge and Benning Road. There are connections to both Pennsylvania Ave and Constitution Ave bridges as well. I expected to see a lot of cyclists on these new paths but they were deserted. The section northeast of thr Navy Yard is incomplete but you can easily detour via M St or even L St for less traffic to pick up the trail after a few blocks. The new multi-purpose bridge at Pennsylvania Ave on the west side of the river is well done. Once the connection to MD is completed, north of Benning Road, an additional MD to VA path along the rivers will be a great ride.

The live fire dates from long ago. There used to be a couple of explosives ranges on the south side of Poe Road (I blew up several trees there in the late ’70s). The construction of the housing on the north side of Route 1 pretty much eliminated that as an option.
They also had a construction waste landfill of some sort out there. It has been quiet for probably 25 years.
I live in the housing area north of Poe and have also explored back in there extensively on my mountail bike. All you have to do is say (a) you were in the Accotink Creek Wildlife Refuge and got lost (b) you’re a bow hunter checking out the high seats for next season or (c) Sign, what sign? I still use Poe once in a while to get to Tulley Gate but it’s just as easy to take Telegraph to the Fairfax Pkwy Extension bike trail to Backlick and cross at the Hess station. I, too, never use Rt 1 but don’t ever need to, there’s plenty of alternates.

ParticipantGreat, once both sides are completed and linked it will make a great Anacostia loop ride.
I’m using all southern perimeter routes to connect from CCT to Anancostia Riverwalk Trail. Is there a decent east-west corridor route bisecting the city south of K street?
