Does anyone do this? It seems wasteful to toss them when the batteries are done, but OTOH I can see people thinking it absurdly cheap to maintain something handed out for free. Depending on the response, I may have a further question.
Yes, it is easy to do.

ParticipantI recommend using clips or clipless pedals.
My fixed gear came with regular pedals. On the first big downhill my feet slipped off. It scared me enough to get clips. I now have clipless pedals.bikesnick
ParticipantIt has been a while since this thread has been used.
I passed this today and enjoyed the spherical center and mirror.

That looks really dangerous. Imagine encountering it under darkness on your first-ever ride along this road. I’m guessing that there is neither paint nor signage giving any prior indication that merging left is required?
Actually there is a sign that says the bike lane ends; I should have been back a bit when I took the picture.

ParticipantI am happy that bicycle lanes are showing up in Tysons, but this is rather an abrupt end.

ParticipantI, too, recommend Rudy Project. The wrap around lens gives greater viewing than with my regular glasses. The transition lens has worked great. The [URL=”http://http://macphersonopticians.com/”%5Doptician%5B/URL%5D worked with me to get a good fit and prescription with a very small area for biofocals (to read cue sheets). They have worked great in shade, sun, rain, and humidity.

ParticipantMy new bike is Mr.Pink or just Mr.P, but that is the All-City Cycles model name, too.

OK. Because the ride ends on Staten Island, those heading back to Manhattan get a ride on the Staten Island Ferry. My concern would be riding down to the ferry at the crack of dawn (and whether the ferry runs that early) to get to Battery Park. I don’t recall seeing a bunch of hotels on Staten Island.
We have done the ride several times. There are good hotels near Newark (New Jersey) airport. On the morning of the ride, there is a short drive through Staten Island to parking at the ferry. (Yes, the ferry runs early.) After the ride, you are back at your car and do not have to take the very crowded ferry back to Manhattan.
I have heard that some people have gone to breakfast at restaurants about a mile past the start line. Then after the first group of dignitaries ride past, they join in. Also, others have said to wait for the last groups to leave the start line and the crowd is much less.
The last time we went, we stayed in Manhattan and rented bikes.bikesnick

My wife and I will probably be heading down but we have not looked at the logistics yet…. more likely than not we will drive down, park 10 miles out and ride in the rest of the way. I suspect we will just do a day trip unless hotels are available (doubtful). I’m probably most interested in the men’s road race or the TT but who knows… September is a long way off according to my calendar.
This sounds like a good idea. September is getting closer.
Where will you park and which route to downtown?bikesnick

Corner of Monument Dr & Fair Lakes Parkway near Fair Oaks Mall – GB’s right, I only know this from driving there
Correct.
I’m trying to imagine why someone would actually want to ride there.
I think this might be a little to far west / suburban / not bike friendly location for most of the forum. It is a cool statue though.
Yes, I agree, but that was part of the challenge.

ParticipantI have been wanting to ride to this spot. Today was the day.

I used an automotive gear puller on my single speed conversion of dumpster find road bike.
