Lots of biology at the zoo! Also didn’t realize but the full name for the zoo is Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute.

ParticipantSwahili Village, a delicious Kenyan restaurant downtown. In addition to the mouth-watering grilled meat I discovered that Kenyan food has a lot of Indian influence including chapati flat bread and samosas–an immigrant heritage of Indians in East Africa. And now they bring that to share here!

ParticipantA mural of Josephine Butler, an activist who co-founded the DC Statehood Party. This is one of the 51st State mural series which I hadn’t seen. Easy to miss since it’s on a rooftop at the corner of Vermont and 11th St NW.

ParticipantDoesn’t count but I thought it was pretty neat that the former Taqueria Nacional was inside a former Post Office building which I somehow never noticed until now. Eating tacos, mailing packages, same diff!

This intersection in Mt Pleasant is pretty cool as there are 3 churches, one on each corner. You can take your pick which one to worship!

ParticipantYum’s, a popular Chinese takeout on 14th St. They are known for their chicken wings with mambo or mumbo sauce which is something unique to Chinese takeouts in DC. The sauce is a bit like a sweet and sour sauce and has been popularized that you can now find it in supermarkets and restaurants. I thought it may have been invented by one of the Chinese takeouts but apparently the sauce may have been invented in Chicago. The Chinese takeouts though have probably helped to popularize it!

ParticipantStatue dedicated to Mustafa Kemal Ataturk the first President of Turkey, outside the Turkish Ambassador’s Residence. Apparently Ataturk was an honorary name given to him meaning “father of the Turks” and you pretty much can’t go anywhere in Turkey without finding something named after him!

Participant2/16 Historic House
The Lindens. This is the oldest house in DC, built in 1754, even older than the Old Stone House in Georgetown. It wasn’t originally built here but in Massachusetts! It was later moved to DC in the 1930’s.
