ParticipantSecstate and I went to the Groundog Day Festival in Dupont circle yesterday. The prognosis from our very own Potomac Phil is that there will be six more weeks of winter and political gridlock. We tried hunting for groundhog donuts but to no avail. Instead settled on the chocolate with hazelnut creme from Krispy Kreme. It also had some nuts sprinkled on top which Phil would probably like. Very good, particularly if you like Nutella!

ParticipantLooks like everyone is getting a sweet start to Valentine’s Day! Also hit Dunkin Donuts to try their heart shaped donuts. My coworkers were concerned for my health and helped me eat them. Tried a pink heart with I think a vanilla or banana creme and a chocolate coated heart with a raspberry filling. Didn’t have quick enough fingers to try the last one but I think was a just regular donut with a chocolate coating. I liked the pink one.

Normally I don’t have to go downtown on Thursdays. But: morning polka? I’m in!
Great! If anyone else would like some morning polka, come on down!

ParticipantBeen meaning to hit Duck Donuts for a while and finally made it to the one in Arlington. Their donuts are fresh off the conveyor so you have to wait a bit for them to put on the toppings. You can make your own combinations but I went with a couple of the suggested ones: the blueberry with powdered sugar and vanilla, oreo, and hot fudge drizzle. The donut itself reminded me of those old fashioned donuts like the apple donuts that you get in Shenandoah. Both were tasty, particularly the oreo with the warm fudge. They definitely warmed me up for the ride home!

ParticipantA stop at Denizen’s in Silver Spring. It was hopping this afternoon, perhaps due to the good weather. Opted for the “safety pin”, a citrusy IPA. A refreshing choice for the ride home.

ParticipantStopped by La Colombe in Blagden Alley to refuel and saw something that looked like a donut. Turned out that it’s a pastry called Kouign Amman. Sort of like a croissant with crusty flakes on the outside and a puff pastry interior. This particular one was filled with a cranberry cream. So not exactly a donut but I would submit a worthy consideration!

ParticipantHey everyone,
There’s a little Groundhog Day festival next Thurs in Dupont Circle, around 8:30 – 9. There’ll be free coffee, polka, and of course Potomac Phil. It’s on my way to work so I plan to swing by if anyone would like to join. Afterwards we can go to Krispy Kreme across the street to hunt for any Groundhog Day related donuts and try to also pick up some doughneuring points!

ParticipantNot sure if a non-donut establishment counts but I happened to be at a happy hour at Smoke & Barrel and saw they had sweet potato donuts. Like a good FS rider I couldn’t not order them in the name of science. They tasted a bit like the munchkins at Dunkin Donuts with a bit of a sweet potato aftertaste. Maybe it was the beer or the praline-pecan drizzle but they were pretty tasty!

ParticipantStopped by Astro Donuts on the way to work. They are known for their maple bacon but picked up a pineapple and a German black forest instead to share. The pineapple was a bit sweet and the black forest wasn’t as decadent as expected. A rare off day but more reasons to go back to try their other flavors and see if there is a treasure map hidden inside!

ParticipantAnother fine purveyor of donuts: district Donuts. How can one resist the touch of a blow torch? Their creme brulé is delightfully crusty on top with a cream filling on the inside.

ParticipantHitting up 202 Donuts in Bethesda. The donuts are smaller than some other places so you can easily sample two! I had both the key lime and passion fruit. If you like sweet and tangy, go with the passion fruit!
