ParticipantTo celebrate no one eats alone day on Feb 14, I rode to Northside Social, one of the winter bike to work day pitstops, and pleasantly ran into a convoy of others on the forum doing the same. We all got a free scone and none of us ate alone!

ParticipantBeerneuring #7: Elder Pine
Continuing with the Maryland Brewery Farm series, I tagged along with Eric for his ride to Elder Pine. Not too surprising based on the name but they have a Nordic and pine theme with their beers. Got a flight consisting of a couple of sours, A Sun That Never Sets and In Awe of Blackberry Mango, and a couple of hazy IPA, Treemeister and Vague Illusions. Particularly liked the Sun That Never Sets with the passion fruit and raspberry–tart and a bit sweet. Also the Treemeister which was a solid hazy IPA. Vague Illusions was interesting though for the pine after-taste and the Blackberry Mango with an oaty after-taste.

ParticipantBeerneuring #6: Capitol Cider House
Stopped by Capitol Cider House and got a flight. 3 of them were made in house including Capital Cuvee, Pomme Franc, and House Wild Honeybee. I like my cider a bit sweet so didn’t care so much for the Capital Cuvee or the Pomme France which were both dry. Liked the House Wild Honeybee which was very sweet and strong with the Mead. Bartender also let me try their North Columbia Gold Rush. Didn’t realize you could make port from apples. Since it’s aged in barrels, it was really interesting with the bourbon smell but without the flavor, and it was lighter and less sweet than a traditional port. A nice addition to the cider scene!

ParticipantBeerneuring #5: Crooked Run in Sterling
Discovered that there’s a Crooked Run in Sterling so need to go all the way out to Leesburg! Stopped by and got a flight consisting of Bali an IPA, Sticky Rice a Berliner Weisse, and Merrang also another Berliner Weisse. The order got mixed up so not 100% sure but I liked the Bali with the mango and toasted coconut and the lemony merrang. It really was like having mango sticky rice and lemon meringue pie in a liquid format!

ParticipantChocolateuring #3: Artisan Confections
Stopped by Artisan Confections in Clarendon. They said they source their chocolate from France and I noticed in the display that there was a dark chocolate from Venezuela, not sure if that also came via France. They have lots of interesting chocolates including banana walnut, strawberry ginger, and a vanilla chai truffle all with a pretty pattern. Tried the Affogato which was delightful.

So – I should be out riding, but figured that I’d update my soupy status before I head out.
Places in College Park:
Qu Japan – right off Route 1 – only one veg option that you can make spicy. Comes with tofu, mushrooms, corn, bean sprouts, and nori (also bamboo shoots – but not my favorite, so I left it out) with springy chewy noodles in a savory and hot broth.
Saburo – also off Route 1 – Spicy Miso Ramen – this isn’t worth writing about – broth was SUPER salty.
Rockville: The Block, Mama Mei’s – Udon Soup with mushrooms and fried tofu – very filling – but they also threw Bonito Flakes on top – so vegetarians beware. (They probably also add bonito flakes in the stock as well.) The Block in Rockville had tons of space. I will have to go back to get ice cream – they had tons of asian-inspired flavors like – Ube, Lychee, Matcha, and Pandan with Mochi.
DC: Sichuan Pavillion – A huge bowl of Mapo Tofu Noodle Soup – mouth numbing slurpy soup that was splash all over my shirt good. I used to work near Farragut Square – so when HF suggested that we go here, I was all in!
You’ve been busy! Wow, don’t think I’ve ever seen Mapo Tofu as a noodle soup!
