Not sure if it’s for the upcoming Independence Day on Feb 16 or Carnival, but the Embassy of Lithuania was lit up today.

Mural of Buck Hill, a jazz musician, looking over the corner of 14th and U. Not sure if it still is but at the time it was painted it was the tallest mural in DC at 70 ft tall!

Marvin Gaye mural at 7th and S St. He grew up in DC before later moving to Motown. This mural is also by Udofia who painted the wall on Ben’s Chili Bowl.ae6679c9330fa4bac3a1d97e783f951a.jpg

    2/11/21 – Movie Poster

Many of the movie theaters in DC are boarded up or have their movie posters removed but there are some inside the little Sun Cinema in Mt Pleasant. A bit hard to see but those are posters of Godzilla on the wall.a08dbb8d82c4e5b7b788b436ca475364.jpg

Bikedavid – thanks for posting this. I lived here as a teenager at the time and I remember her support being somewhat controversial because politicians were still unsure how to handle the AIDS epidemic. She was married to Senator Warner. Because of her film connections was highly aware of how devastating the disease was, particularly in the creative communities. Her being a politician’s wife, and famous as she was, and outspoken about this helped turn the discussion towards helping rather than judging. It was a glimmer of her as well — she wasn’t just about the facade of Hollywood. I had forgotten all about her support for W-W. I really appreciate this look back!

Thank you for the insight. I didn’t realize she was married to Senator Warner. So interesting to hear how she utilized her connections to change the discussion!

Elizabeth Taylor mural at Dacha beer garden at 7th and Q St. She was apparently a big supporter of the Whitman-Walker Health Center around the corner which provides treatment to those affected by HIV and this mural is a tribute to her.

The red callboxes of DC. They were first installed around the time of the Civil War by the DC fire department as a fire alarm system. If a person saw a fire, they would break the box’s glass and pull a lever to transmit an alarm. A telegraph system would tap out the box number for an operator to dispatch fire engines to that location. They were in use all the way up to the 70’s! Now they have since been converted to art installations.

Wormhole from Wisconsin to Mass. I had spotted this while running but was deterred by the no biking sign. Josh’s post suggested that it is a merely a suggestion so I went back to try it. [emoji57] From the Trader Joe’s on Wisconsin you can either pop out at the Naval Observatory or by the Danish Embassy on Whitehaven. Probably better to go westbound as Josh suggested so you don’t have to climb the stairs going eastbound!

So many great Japanese places in our area! I thought I would highlight a little coffee shop called Harpeth Swill that specializes in Japanese cold brew.
