Participant1/7 – African American Civil War Memorial
This memorial honors the African-American soldiers and sailors that served in the Union Army and Navy during the Civil War. The sculpture depicts the spirit of freedom and the wall behind has the names inscribed of the 200,000 soldiers that served.

ParticipantEvery city needs a Chinatown! The Chinese were one of the first Asian groups to immigrate in large no’s to the US. A fun fact is that the original Chinatown in DC was in Federal Triangle and was later relocated here when federal buildings were built there.

ParticipantA little free library on Euclid St between Ontario and 17th St. This used to have an eclectic collection–from Chinese to LSAT study materials–but now seems to contain only fiction and is well-stocked.

ParticipantThe Sonny Bono Park covered in snow. The tale that I heard was that someone approached Cher if she would like to buy a park in DC to memorialize Sono Bono. She agreed but didn’t realize it would be such a small park, more like a traffic triangle, and was mad afterwards. According to Wikipedia, this land was purchased and revitalized by a friend of Sonny Bono and includes a vault of some memorabilia of the musician. Although sparse, the park is quite lovely in the spring.

ParticipantKalorama Deli. This unassuming deli, like many deli, is run by Korean immigrants. In addition to standard American deli items like burgers, sandwiches, and wings, they also serve some Korean items like bimbimbap, bulgogi, and Mandu dumplings contributing to the culinary landscape. A hidden gem in the neighborhood!

Participant1/3 – Joan of Arc
This magnificent statue of Joan of Arc is located on Meridian Hill and was dedicated on the 510th anniversary of her birth. A fun fact is that even though there are a lot of equestrian statues in DC, this is the only one of a woman.

ParticipantThis little free library is located at 1936 New Hampshire Ave NW, between U and T St, looking quite picturesque with the snow on top.

Going with the spherical lanterns. It may not be cherry blossom season but a reminder that spring isn’t too far away!

ParticipantRiding by Dukem, one of the many Ethiopian restaurants in DC. DC has the largest Ethiopian community outside of Ethiopia and perhaps its greatest contribution has been introducing everyone to Ethiopian cuisine including injera the spongy bread. Dukem has been here for as long as I can remember and, being open late, a great alternative to jumbo slice.

Pretty bad ass. Wonder if she belonged to the Labour Party. [emoji6]

ParticipantCongrats to everyone that participated! We had 16 people participating biking a total of 623 miles to uncover 46 signs. Who knew there were so many and that they came in so many different forms!
Congrats to Sophie CW who found 15 signs! You’ve won some thank you stickers and a gift card so that you can thank anyone! Will be reaching out for your award.
Honorable mention for CBGAnimal for finding one in Spain!
Since I’m a bit partial to the unique signs, also some honorable mentions to:
– the cape at GW by accordioneur
– the fury of gratitude by tomacsh
– the tribute to all the essential workers in St Michaels by boomer
I hope you had a fun playing and maybe got to say some thank you’s!
