I found data on “loading” expressed as a percentage of optimal occupancy, where 100 means full and over 100 means overloaded. See page 5 after the slides. Doesn’t seem to be restricted to rush hour though.

Really? I’d say it seems you live in metro fantasy land. I actually have to take the train a stop or two in the OPPOSITE direction in order to get back on a different train heading in my direction. And that’s at 4:30pm before the real rush hour crush.

We can’t even get cyclists to call their passes; there’s no way they’re not going to board crowded trains. And what if the train fills up after they’ve boarded?

I’ll say it again, it’s a TERRIBLE idea. Metro is bad (crowded) enough as it is. Ridership may be down but safety issues or crowded tracks (OSB for example) mean the trains aren’t running as frequently.

I share your skepticism. And a rule only allowing bikes when there is room for them doesn’t work if the bike is on the train first, before the crush of people.

I’d like to see them figure out how to do this but I don’t think just ending the time restrictions alone will work.

I found this cyclingtips podcast episode to have a good breakdown/explanation as it affects bicycles in general: https://cyclingtips.com/2018/09/cyclingtips-podcast-a-gravel-racers-pursuit-record-and-tariffs-on-bikes/

Ironically, as is mentioned in the podcast, this has the effect of encouraging US consumers to start buying direct from overseas — whether truly direct from Alibaba/eBay/etc. or places like the UK. Since tariffs are waived for items under $800. You’d be hard-pressed to spend more than $800 on anything from China — and if you did, the seller would likely lower the declared value anyway.

    Hmmm, interesting. Thanks.

Lady in blue on Bluemont Junction trail:

    1. Please call your pass.
    2. On second thought, if you are passing me exactly when I am passing a pedestrian, don’t. Wait, and then call your pass.

The latest round of tariffs seem to cover most bike products from China with a 10 percent tariff until the end of the year, when they are scheduled to rise to 25 percent. Accessories like helmets and lights are excluded.

“The tariffs hit virtually all bike related items out of China, including complete bikes, frames, components, tires, wheels, inner tubes, auto racks and some other accessories. Additionally, the tariffs affect some non-bike specific items that the industry uses, including hand tools, nuts and bolts, and other machinery. “

A friend found a bike on Craigslist. It looks to me like a too good to be true situation. The seller says he likes fixing up old bikes and selling them. He has a storage unit full of them. How can I tell if this sale is legit?

You can look up if they have been reported stolen here. Of course, many are not reported or not put into this particular database. I don’t know if the police put bikes in here from police reports.

Yeah, I noticed that if you look up Arlington in Google Maps and zoom out enough to show the county’s borders, it shows the border of Arlington and Alexandria wrapped around Four Mile Run all the way up Wilson Blvd., as if Alexandria owns the stream. It’s weird.

“Peter’s Take” weekly column in ArlNOW is on e-scooters: https://www.arlnow.com/2018/08/23/peters-take-more-thoughts-on-arlingtons-docketless-vehicle-pilot/ (posting does not necessarily constitute endorsement or agreement). For those not familiar with ArlNOW’s weekly columnists, Peter’s column seems to reflect the establishment Democratic point of view, since ArlNOW has a separate “Progressive” column.

As I recall, Peter’s Take was supposed to be the liberal/progessive column to match the conservative one, but Peter came down so conservative on so many issues that they added the Progressive column. Just sayin. Thanks for the article.

I don’t mind them as a concept. I have even considered buying one. I have a problem with the way some people ride them though. Twice this week I have had to break to a complete stop because they have come straight at me cutting through people. It is just a matter of time before I crash with one. Some of them use headphones and swerve around the bike path, so of course they can’t hear bike bells and won’t let you pass.

Scooters are to cyclists as cyclists are to motorists.

What a dilemma – courts are where both lots of criminals and lots of cops can be found. Is it the worst place to park a bike or the safest?

As a wise old man once said about this topic:

Nobody will notice. If someone does, they won’t care. If they do care, they won’t say so. If they do say so, they won’t call the cops. If they do call the cops, the cops will probably not know either. In other words, don’t spend any energy worrying about it.”

There is no way that even a strobe light in broad daylight even at 5 meters could impair someone’s version even if a person looked directly into it. But how do I know that? Because I see many more people with strobe lights on the trail–the number has probably increased eight fold

The fact that more people are using them doesn’t prove they don’t impair vision. That’s like saying nobody is annoyed by, say, car alarms because you hear car alarms going off all the time.

Why it is that we never this complaint during the day?

Two obvious reasons – first, far fewer cyclists use those lights during the day, and second, one’s pupils are adjusted to handle more light during the day so another light source isn’t a problem, while at night, one’s pupils are wide open for night vision.

These imaginary pains and complaints should just end.

It’s really inappropriate to claim that someone else is just lying or is somehow not experiencing something when they complain about it, or to say “harden up.” We as cyclists make many complaints about our place in a world of unsafe drivers and badly designed roads, and we get mighty pissed when our complaints are unfairly dismissed or laughed at. We should not treat each other the same way.

I’m also kind of confused about the best way to get from the north side of 50 to the South side.

You can go up and around to cross at Rhodes St. if you want. Further up, you can cross at Pershing and there’s a trail running east from there.

Just to stir the pot, how are lights okay on the road but not on the trail? Do the trees on the trail reflect light back like a magnifier in broad day light? lol omg wtf

In 50 years of cycling, some of it racing, I have never heard such unfounded claims that a battery-operated bike light could “hurt” someone’s eyes on even a cloudy day just on the trail only. The culture of cycling certainly has changed in the last five years, like the guy, who tapped someone on the head and caused a crash because he had some imaginary rule about passing other cycles.

For less experienced riders, keep your lights on when on the trail. Cars will see you at road intersections and so will pedestrians, with their back to you when they see a light reflecting off a sign or tree in a “merciless flash” of light. If anyone has the eyes hurting from such a low power light please see an eye doctor or psychologist. Please do not challenge someone on the trail about it because there are the truly crazy out there that may slab you for not minding your own business (not me though because I will just laugh at you for being harmlessly silly).

Cycling is not about controlling the behavior of others. It’s not about taking your personal problems out on other people while riding. It’s about being free and happy. It use to be about breaking the rules sometimes. It’s about taking risks. It’s about having a health respect for larger vehicles and making peace with others rather than viewing it as combat.

Please don’t take this as an angry post because honestly I’m laughing. This thread is so funny! Beers are on me if I see any of you in person. Seriously, bike light on trail only hurts your eyes. Wah-hahahaha! Now I’ve heard it all. smdh

So you’ve never heard of someone complaining about a light hurting their eyes, therefore it can’t happen, therefore you mock it and think it’s jut about control and not their eyes.
