Audrey and I rode our new recumbent, “Banana Peel,” to W&L.

At 15th and Penn I just follow the bike light.

I like the idea that we even have lights for bikes. I remember when we didn’t. So I try to use them.

    Received this email back:

I received an email you sent to our “Feedback” address in regards to a park vehicle blocking the trail access near Madison Manor Park in Arlington. Our park specialist was checking out a report from one of our trail patrollers about a potential issue near the 4.5 mile marker. The next time staff is in the area I’ll make sure they park in a suitable area that is clear for trail users. Thank you for alerting me to this matter and for your interest in the W&OD Trail.

This response doesn’t explain why the truck was parked upside down though.

Here’s my planned route. I’ll leave home about 6:15 to get to the Falls Church pit stop when they open at 6:30. This is mostly using shared use trails and bike lanes, but will get out for a distance on Columbia Pike from Joyce St to Penrose Sq and then on to Highland St. After completing the last stop at Ballston, I’m going home via Wilson Blvd to use the Bluemont section’s bike lane.

You’re going to be in town?

There’s a fatal flaw in your plan – the afternoon pit stop at Arlington’s new brewery.

So you need to drop off all your water bottles, get back on your bike in the afternoon and get over there.

    Hi Syfurian,

Why do you want to get a recumbent? It isn’t necessarily safer. In fact, a recumbent can be less safe because it’s lower than a regular bike. It’s not as visible to others and others (cars, other cyclists) may not see it.

The best way to make sure your child is safe on a bike is to teach her how to ride safely and keep her out of tough situations like high bike or car traffic, and make sure she rides with a helmet and maybe pads and gloves if she is just learning and falls often. And don’t let her go too fast until she’s ready.

Is she already riding a bike or would this be her first one?

For the original poster, yes, your wife is gonna be mad. But your son may be really proud of you sometime and remember when his dad threw down with some %$^%%$ and ran him off.

I don’t see a dad starting a physical fight with someone as being something to be proud of, nor a good thing to learn. Confronting someone for rude behavior is a good example, perhaps. If the other guy started the physical fight out of nowhere, maybe. But overall it sounds like a small dispute turned into a fight, and that’s never a good example.

Baiskeli, you are simply nucking futs. If you consider the sexism men experience (judged less trustworthy around children, not being able to watch little league games alone, being depicted as dumb in entertainment media…) as anything compared to what women have to go through (garbing your ass is a compliment, feeling obligated to engage in sex in many situations, radically higher sexual assault rates …) you are nucking futs. Even the “anti-feminism/anti-SJW” guys like Milo Yiannopoulos, Gavin Mcinnes and yea even Roosh, would never say it equal.

Did I say it was equal?

    No.

I guess I wasn’t clear enough. No, I’m not saying it is equal. Of course it isn’t. It goes without saying that it isn’t equal.

So, having read that, maybe my words will be more clear.

I concede that I am still nucking futs though.

Hah. I can remember arguing with someone (volunteer with the park patrol) when that limit went into effect that the police would eventually use it as a revenue source. He claimed that they would never be conducting normal speed traps, that it was just there as a tool to curb the most egregious behavior.

Just as an aside, a “speed trap” is not just a cop waiting to catch speeders, as its often used today, its when cops in small towns would put lower-speed limit signs just past higher speeds, so close that nobody had time to slow down after seeing the signs, and then parking the cop car just past to catch all the speeders and raise money from people passing through.

Its nicely illustrative of the core problem that a thread about the crap women deal with (sometimes on a daily basis) gets turned around to be about how hard men actually have it.

I was waiting for someone to say that. I don’t think that’s quite what it has turned around into though.

I would say that “sexism” against men (which I define as social pressure on men to conform to traditional gender roles) is a second-order effect of misogyny, so it’s damage is a bit more muted and indirect. But you can’t solve the former without first solving the latter, so misogyny is really the core problem to focus on. But I think demonstrating how misogyny can have negative effects on men is one way to make the problem relevant to men who might not otherwise feel compelled to do anything about it.

I’m talking about plain old sexism against men. It can be just as damaging, not that it really matters – it’s still wrong. Certainly women suffer more sexism overall, and of course we should solve both. But the harm goes both ways – in my example, pressure on men not to care for children hurts women by perpetuating the inverse (that women should take on the bulk of childcare). So yeah, it’s all one big cauldron of sexism stew in the grand scheme of things.

You could be “friendly” and make a comment and ask some friendly questions about the bike. Like, “Hey, what kind of computer is that? Do you like it? Where did you get it?” At least that way you could probably ascertain what was really going on. At the same time you could try to get a better mental description if you then decided to follow up with the police.

And… “How long have you had this bike?” If he answers, “About 10 minutes” that would be a dead giveaway.

Uh, Detective Steve O, what if he just bought it ten minutes ago? Huh? Huh?

By the way, I might still move next door to you so I can taunt you every day.

Pointing out sexism against men doesn’t mean you think sexism against men is just as damaging or prevalent as sexism against women. It’s just a commentary on the idea that men should call out other men on sexism. If so, women should call out other women too, such as when they view a man caring for children with skepticism or leave him out by referring just to “moms.”
