I’d guess the straight shot on the W&OD would be almost as fast as trying to navigate the other option.

(Plus I will earn another toll payment).

The blue route on the Google directions looks good to me. Low traffic and right past the monuments. Note that the C&O and Capital Crescent Trails are not the same thing. If you mean to continue on the Capital Crescent, you don’t switch back. But I’m guessing you’re on your way to the C&O toward Pittsburgh.

The part along the river is a bike trail, so that’s nice.

Note that the Whitehurst Freeway is an elevated highway, and so when you get to it, you’ll actually be going under the freeway on K Street.

Did you know, the Four Mile Run Trail might never have existed, and in its place could have stood the Four Mile Run Expressway? I scared people this morning at coffee club with the following images showing designs for a motor expressway (first image is of Carlin Springs Rd/US-50/Four Mile Run Expressway near Glencarlyn & Bluemont Park; second image is of Walter Reed Dr/Shirlington Rd/Four Mile Run Expressway near Shirlington):

I’ve seen that before; thanks for posting it. It would have run the length of the trail beyond Bluemont, in fact. Scary.

There is no safe way for cyclists to cross the Potomac bridges except on sidewalks/paths.

This isn’t safe either – he’s not wearing a helmet.

Pro-tip: If a stinging insect flies into your jersey (or sports bra: I don’t wear one), it should sting you only once. You don’t need to take off any clothing to squish it. As soon as you feel that first sting, squish it with all your might such that you hear a satisfying crunching sound. You can empty it and its guts out afterward.

(caveat – does not work if bug is on your back)

A honeybee’s stinger will stick in you though and keep pumping the venom in. You gotta scrape the stinger out, not just squish the (poor) bee.

Sure, pal, just shoal on up to the very front past a long line of cyclists waiting in a polite line for the light at the Int. O’Doom. You’re more important than all of us after all.

Is it legal for a cyclist to travel through DC tunnels? Not 395, of course, but under Dupont Circle, Scott Circle, VA Ave, etc. Some of them have signs that say “Pedestrians Prohibited” but I don’t think that applies to cyclists. I sometimes ride them and sometimes get nervous and my WABA and forum searches came up empty.

If you’re in the roadway on a bike, you’re legally a vehicle, not a pedestrian.

It could be a safety hazard though since motorists going into tunnels have a moment where their eyes are adjusting to the dark and they may not see you, or they might try to pass you and you have little room to avoid them.

Addendum – I see KLizotte has already posted the exact same thoughts.

There was actually legislation to fix this, Senate Bill 925. It looks like it has passed, and is waiting to be signed by the governor.

The governor appears to have vetoed this one but signed a similar one that came from the House.

I would add to all of this that you should let the kid know that this rule only applies to school crossing guards. There are still people out there who believe that cyclists are required to dismount when in a crosswalk.

Yes, there are those people. I once had a random stranger tell me that I needed to dismount to use a crosswalk, and also that I should be on the street and not the sidewalk. I don’t think he understood that those two claims contradict each other.
