ParticipantMore information about this can be found on Facebook by doing a search for “Ride w/Tim Holden”.

ParticipantA Washcycle post added the detail that people would meet at 7:30 next to the sand volleyball courts on the Mall (along the river north of the Lincoln Memorial). I hope that helps the two of us, and maybe more.

ParticipantNever mind.

ParticipantI volunteer to provide the annual pointless prize for most Hains Point Loops.

ParticipantTheir “homework” should include (in addition to checking crime reports) biking through any detours under consideration, eastbound and westbound, both during the day and at night, and documenting good and bad aspects along each option under consideration.

ParticipantIt would be great to have an alternative to going through FMR Park, which is not very appealing for those of us who ride home alone late at night.

ParticipantMy last pair of Gatorskins were great too. No flats and no slippage, and they lasted over 7000 miles. I probably should have kept them longer. I just replaced them a couple of weeks ago. No issues yet, although I now have my fingers crossed.

ParticipantAs a few already know, after three years and with additional other responsibilities, I’m passing on the baton for organizing the Freezing Saddles initial and final happy hours, so any interested volunteers shouldn’t hesitate to step up! It’s a great way to contribute and it doesn’t need to be organized the same way we have in the past (e.g., finding a venue with a separate room). With Freezing Saddles growing both in numbers and in people living outside of Arlington, it might be time for some fresh ideas (although Cap City in Shirlington may still be possible as a venue if someone else would like to arrange that). We didn’t have an initial happy hour the first year, but still managed to have a lot of fun get-togethers, with teams making their team events open to all Freezing Saddles participants. That worked well too. Please keep in mind that Freezing Saddles depends on volunteers, so no volunteers = no initial or final happy hours. (Freezing Saddles is mostly about the riding and the friendships/teams anyway, right?)

ParticipantYes, I just saw that and tried to delete my post. Sorry – you have it all covered!

ParticipantI would vote against putting slackers on the registration form because it may be too enticing to newbies. My own view is that it should be limited to two or three time alumni or those who have made significant volunteer contributions, with a gatekeeper. The teams are what makes Freezing Saddles as fun as it is.

ParticipantI hope they’ll at least keep FMR trail open between Shirlington and Mt. Vernon Avenue. We’ll be majorly screwed if they don’t.

ParticipantIn! (and rsvp’d on eventbrite, I think)

ParticipantWABA and BikeArlington did a great job with this. Newer riders were provided with lots of good safety, equipment and riding etiquette information by LCI instructors, and all enjoyed the easy night ride in great weather with good alternative routes shown and cool little known information provided about several points of interest. The ride was followed by a visit to the Tech Shop (open 24/7), where pizza, beer, water, swag/maps and info packages were waiting for us and a short video about the Tech Shop and some of its offerings was shown (this is a place where it seems like you can make almost anything, including bicycle-related things). A tour was offered, but I couldn’t stay so will have to do that another time. Free tours of this amazing facility are offered every day and evening on the hour. Even without having taken the tour, I highly recommend checking this place out. They also have lots of special events on their meetup page that members of the public can participate in without needing to become a member. (Rube Goldberg group projects, cocktail mixology nights, etc. ) In connection with the ride, I learned, among other things, that the fix-it station has a neat water bottle filler, that Bob and Edith’s Diner location is big, nice and just off Eads (not part of the program but a happy discovery) and where the alligators are (not telling, but my Strava track may offer a clue). Thanks WABA and BikeArlington for a great evening!
