On a related note….. Costco is selling Bolle ski goggles with both dark and light lenses for relatively inexpensive (at least in world of ski goggles). If tonight’s ride is uncomfortable, I’m going to be tempted to head there….
I use my motorcycle goggles. Cheap and replacement lenses are ~4 bucks.

Interestingly, Dr. Google tells me that fat doesn’t have the same circulation that muscle does. 😮
My ex used to have the same issue or pretty close. Her butt and outer thighs would get ridiculously cold while she was out skiing or riding in cold weather. Not so much while participating in the activity, but particularly uncomfortable when circulation returned after coming inside. Keeping the insulation layer and shell layer sized for a loose fit (tricky while bent forwards in the cycling position) helped for her. She also used a jacket with a long tail that came down over her butt and sometimes an insulated skirt. The long tailed jacket was the thing she used most.
Edit to add: I got a pair of PI thermal fleece bib shorts for this winter. Great alone with knee or leg warmers but also a very cozy base layer when its time to layer up.

ParticipantAfter consulting the women of the house… They didn’t have anything politically correct to say.
Helmet cam or appearance thereof is a decent idea. Ignore the assholes and pedal on was the most realistic. Ride with a pissed off woman’s roller derby team in tow was probably most likely to include a felony outcome.

ParticipantIs there a vigilante justice bike gang following nearby option?
I’ll ask the ladies of the house for suggestions. They were teenagers on bikes when it was much less common. I’m guessing they’ll say ride like you’re on a mission and dress to blend in. Wear something that looks like a GoPro on top of helmet. And, those guys are assholes.
If riding with a friend is an option that’s cool or just following along someone who rides about the same pace. Speaking as a somewhat over-protective middle aged guy, if another cyclist said they wanted to ride along with me because they don’t like that intersection or area coming up, or whatever. I would bend over backwards to ride with them and help them feel safe.

Hi friends,
I got in my first semi-serious crash last Thursday afternoon in Rosslyn (my fault). I hate commuting through Rosslyn because some roads lack bike lanes and taxis tend to idle in the bike lanes where they do exist. Anyway, I was gathering speed going downhill from Clarendon and wiped out in the bike lane at 19th St N & N Lynn St (in front of the Cosi). I don’t remember what happened, but I think I must have hit a rock/ grate, pinched a tire, then wiped out. I’m familiar with this route and not sure how I lost control, although I recognize that I was going too fast.
I wasn’t seriously hurt, but I did have a concussion, chip some teeth, sprain my hands, and have bad road rash on my face & hands (including a busted lip and double black eye). I was wearing a helmet, for reference! I slept and rested a lot over the weekend and am starting to heal and feel better, though I am worried I may need a root canal for one of my chipped teeth (the dentist wants me to wait a week to see if it dies or if the inflammation goes down).
Shoutout to the Good Samaritans who helped me and the EMTs who came to the scene. I ended up in the ER and was happy that nothing more serious happened, but it was a pretty scary incident. I’m still recovering but hoping to get back in the saddle in a few weeks, though I think I will be scared for a while. I need to fix my bike, too– my shifter cables are messed up and I have a flat tire (which possibly dented/ untrued the rim as well).
Just wanted to share. Be careful, ya’ll.
Hope you heal up ok dude. That reminds me of an epic face plant I did when I was young, back when helmets were optional. Scars remain 20 something years later to add to my rugged good looks (cough cough). If you need help fixing your bike let me know.

Agreed! It was totally fun. And hard. This was my first ever bike race of any kind, and I blame Sunyata for that.
For those of you unfamiliar, this is the recommended way to make yourself around a cross course:

Actually riding on top of the bike is saved for the rare flat spots. Is that what they call Cross Fit?

I can ride lead out for a solid 15-20 seconds at KOM speed if you need me.
I posted that without actually looking at the speed… I’d need a tailwind.

Here is a wheel set from Nashbar for $125* if you are willing to wait till 12/29:

I have an older model of those wheels on my backup commuter bike. I need the 36 spokes… They are good wheels but have a narrow-ish rim. I like the tire profile of 35c tires on a wide rim. I think I have 32c tires on those and they are about as big as I would go.
I even shifted into the wheel once, in a fit of exhaustion induced clumsiness. Wheel still got me home, but I had to replace 5 or 6 spokes and true everything back up.

ParticipantI had to replace my wheels last year, the rims had run their course like yours. I went decidedly in the heavy duty camp. Kind of the opposite of the wheels Honz would be interested in
Good build quality. I am not the lightest guy and carry a ton of shonky with me to work. Had to tighten up the rear wheel after a couple hundred miles, which is to be expected.

The cup and cone bearings on the cheaper shimano hubs are not silky smooth like cartridge bearings. But they are easy to service and last a long long time like Mr. Meatmotor says.

ParticipantGlad to hear you are getting some rowing time in addition to your other workouts. That’s awesome.
I’m fortunate enough to have my own erg. So I don’t have many excuses.

So I’m not sure how I’ll do with this, but it is getting me to the gym beyond my two days with my trainers (Rat Bastard and Satan’s Mistress). I may
or may not hit the 100k meters mark to earn the charity donation but it certainly has been a kickstarter for me. I actually did a two-a-day at the gym yesterday since my training session in the morning didn’t include any erg meters.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

ParticipantConcept2 has a bike erg now. I had no idea… I don’t really have a place for it right now but it is interesting.
