The cheapest I can find online.
I think my 26″ ones are Schwalb Marathons, but they could be Nokians.
I would make sure they have reflective sidewalls given the early afternoon sunsets.
Thanks, I’ll look into getting a pair and hopefully join you all for freezing saddles.

Winter commuting will be mandatory once we restart Freezing Saddles. Buy your studded tires now!
Last winter, studded tires on a mountain bike only slowed my commute by a couple mph. I would only add 15 minutes under “normal” conditions (packed ice or less than 1″ of snow).
Sweet, easier to justify if it is only adding 15 minutes. Which studded tires do you recommend?
Thanks!

ParticipantSince you guys bring it up, how doable is a 14 mile commute on multi use paths in the snow? I know the paths won’t be plowed. Currently takes me about an hour to commute in, would I need to budget twice as much time?
Thinking about getting studded tires for my old mountain bike…

A group of us (I think I am the only Bike Forums participant) meet about 6AM for a 1 hr or so ride. For much of the spring, late summer, and fall, that means we start while it is still dark and see the dawn. Also encoutner lots of critters, a mix of illuminated and ninja style riders and runners. Other references – see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dawn_Patrol_(1938_film) and surfer slang.
Thanks for the explanation, sounds like fun!

What is a dawn patrol ride?

Many of us use these and really like them, for the reasons described in the post above. I bought the Performance Bike version (Forte) and have had no problems with them. The set I bought generally keeps the same side up after you unclip, so I haven’t had the issue Andrew describes, except when I first start a new ride with a different type of shoes.
Arlingtonrider’s point is valid, I only have this issue about 10% of the time.

ParticipantI use the Shimano A530s on my Surly Cross Check, they work pretty well for me. I generally wear normal shoes for quick errands and switch to cleated bike shoes for my longer commute into work. The only annoyance is when you are spinning up at intersection and trying to clip only to discover you are on the wrong side of the pedal. When I had a pair of cleated Keens (recessed cleat) it wasn’t to big of a deal because I could pedal on the flat side until I got an opportunity to flip the pedal, but with cleated road shoes (exposed cleat) my foot slips of the pedal. Hope that helps.

Howdy guys, new to this group. I was lucky enough to be introduced to the Wednesday Coffee Crew, is this on tomorrow? If so what time?
Welcome!!!
Typically most of us arrive around 7/7:15 AM, I won’t be able to make it tomorrow but hope to be there next Friday.

Is this still going on? Just signed up here and found this thread. I pass by the GL every morning and can always use another cup of coffee. I’d also love to meet some of you fellow commuters out on the trail.
Thanks.
I plan on being there around 7am, looking forward to meeting you!

He’s going to tear it up on a geared bike.
That is my hope, his number one complaint on longer rides is the hills. Hopefully the 6-speed will solve that
