Frog lights! I love them! I will be riding the trails as an out of town visitor next MON thru next THURS—I’ll be staying in Bethesda, NEAR the main bike trail. I’d like to get some more frog lights in case I am out after dark! (I have one) Any suggestions of a store near this area? –Samantha M

http://www.freshbikescycling.com/ has a location two blocks from the Bethesda metro, and about five blocks from the Capital Crescent Trail, that will take you down to Georgetown.

Clearly the implication is that you should begin replacing your fleet, one per year, with brand new (and really expensive) bikes with brake lever shifters.

What do you expect from the business school?

What about the forces of loaded panniers (laptop, lunch, change of clothes, groceries?) on that rack, and the stress that accompanies riding over bumpy trails, tree roots, and potholes that we encounter in the regular commute? That’s what would worry me the most, and I don’t think are usually taken in to account in a standard ‘performance oriented’ overview of cycling forces and energy.

Wanted to add some experience I had in trying to find a navigation app that I could use on my smartphone to follow a cue sheet. I downloaded OSMAnd the Open Street Map (Android Version) and loaded up a cue sheet I created in RideWithGPS. You can use a downloaded map, so it won’t require tons of data, and it has voice navigation, which I really liked. I placed it in my back pocket, and listened for directions. It worked marginally well. It was confused a few times when I veered off route to see if it would navigate me back on track. I think this might work well if it was mounted on the handlebars, so you could see the screen, but then that might kill the battery. I thought it was a good effort, but wasn’t super impressed. At least not impressed enough to purchase a handlebar mount to further research. I haven’t uninstalled it from my phone yet, so there may still be hope, but I don’t think it quite lives up to the potential out there, and from what I gather, isn’t quite as reliable as a Garmin 705 or 800 for following a cue sheet. I may yet take it out again for a portion of the Kill Bill Ride, to see how it does. I know it seems odd to write about a product I wasn’t in love with, but I figured I’d share my experience in case there were folks looking for this kind of information.

Of course, I get to avoid the glorified sidewalk that is the bottom of the Custis and that fine Lynn/Lee “situation.” Of course, YMMV.

Ugh, I couldn’t handle riding through Clarendon on a regular basis. I’ll take the crazy joggers on the Custis any day.

This situation happened to me last year. Despite being very clear with the officer about the law, he persisted that “if I see you riding here again, I’ll cite you.”

Greg- that makes me curious. It seems that the legality of an action could then depend on who is observing you. If the cop sees you and tells you not to ride in that street, then riding there is illegal (?) but if another cop is watching, and doesn’t say anything, riding there is not illegal? Would the first cop have to tell you each time not to ride there, since if he didn’t tell you not to ride there, then it would still be legal? Where would the record of that be? Strange wording, and I might worry about the interpretations of that particular part of the law. What was your outcome?

I’ve been wondering the same thing about Virginia Ave under 23rd Street. I believe that particular stretch is even safer for cyclists (rarely 2 lanes of cars) – not the DC traffic laws have a perfect correlation to safety.

A lot of folks (myself included) ride VA Ave under 23rd st every day. Just need to be aware of merging to the left lane to get to the Kennedy Center and Bridge.

    Road Route:
Follow K Street out from under the White Hurst Freeway. Connect to Penn. Avenue at the GW round-a-bout. Take Penn Avenue to 10th Street. There is a bike path after you pass the White House.

I’d +1 this route. The drivers can seem a bit intimidating at the intersection of K and 27th, but you can hop on the access road at 25th to get to the foggy bottom circle. If you’re riding this route in the morning, it’s not too crowded, and the lights from the circle to the white house are timed pretty nicely for a bike going 15 mph.

This is the route I usually take to get from K/water street to anywhere near the white house.

Glad to hear Jan is good people. From what I know of the bicycle biz, most folks aren’t in it for the huge sums of cash ;) so I figured he was pretty committed. Looking forward to crashing the open house!

I am a panniers kind of guy, so I would likely use a rear rack that clamps onto the seat post. Would that create too much stress on the frame at the seat post area for an older Cf frame?

The mechanics at my shop always balked at installing a seat post rack on a CF bike. I think there are concerns about clamping pressure on the carbon. Th pressure you need to secure the rack might be more than should be applied to the seatpost.

I’m of the school of thought that you shouldn’t augment your bike too much, unless it was designed for it. If there are rack eyelets, then you should get a rear rack. if there aren’t, you should keep the weight on your body, or look for a bike that better suits you needs.

That being said, my bike is way too racy for my needs, but I enjoy it, and I carry a messenger bag for my stuff.

I think Bike Club is simply renovating. http://www.bikeclubva.com/

I like that they call it ‘seasonal renovation’ like they do it every year. I don’t think that place has changed at all in the past four years I’ve been aware of it.

in regards to Bikinetic does anyone know this Jan Feuchtner fella?
