ParticipantI think you’ve got a great idea. My wife surprised me with registration to a century ride this year, and also convinced a good friend of mine to fly out from California. It was a great surprise. If he’s familiar with the areas around here, what about Charlottesville, VA. There are some decent places to eat, and tons of good riding in the hills around Skyline and Shenandoah.

This has really saved me in the past six months. The trick now is to find a way to return some of that time to my wife as well. I’m not sure if it’s just our situation, but I work farther away from home, and have been bike commuting since before baby, so not much has changed, except for the lack of free time outside work, but since the commute is built in to work time, I still get pretty much the same amount of exercise. The Lady is working reduced hours to spend more time with the little one, which is wonderful, but it leaves little if any time on the weekdays for her. Weekends I ride less so she can exercise more, but I wonder if we can find a better solution, or if it’s just a matter of waiting for the little one to get a bit older. I’d love to hear how other parents found that balance.

you’re straying dangerously close to recumbent territory….

It’s one of those “front” seats, so the kid is in front of you
our nephew had something like that, the neon green one. The idea of the kid in front makes me uneasy. tiny little airbag.

They’re doing the challenge again this year? All I find is last year’s challenge and this year’s Turkey Takeoff.
It’s not easy to find with popular search engine. here’s the link: http://www.rapha.cc/festive-500

It’s interesting that the Lady brought up transporting the kid as an excuse not to bike — our 1-year-old LOVES the bike. She definitely prefers it to the car, even in the cold (we have a bobike mini with a wind screen, so it’s much warmer than what we feel). The kid has to be able to sit up well for the seat to work, but once they can, it’s awesome!
Yeah, our six month old is just now starting to sit up, so we haven’t started looking for a trailer yet. I’m sure we’ll have one by the time she’s a year old though.
I like the idea of a cargo bike with me pedaling, the Lady on back, and the little one in a child carrier on the rear deck, but again, probably not until at least next summer.

3) Do one between Christmas and New Years so we don’t have to make it home at a reasonable hour because the next day is a work/school day for many.
I’d be up for this! Plus it might help me with the Rapha Holiday 500km Challenge.

ParticipantI asked the Lady last night why she doesn’t bike commute and her answers were:
1. wardrobe
2. makeup
3. transporting our 6 month oldShe’s a sole proprietor, so appearance is very important, and she doesn’t have a separate entrance to sneak in unseen. she’s expressed interest in cycling again when the weather gets warmer, so that’s promising, but her issues rule out all but the nicest of days.

ParticipantYou are correct. The reporter was not. So many issues with that first report. No lower thirds on the video to identify the interviewees or give context or weight to their answers. Also, in the initial release, Nelle Pierson is identified as Waba Pierson, and she is never referred to as the WABA Events Coordinator in either version. At least they corrected her name. I think the coverage shows the unfamiliarity/indifference of the reporter and editorial staff.

ParticipantI’ve also met an Australian or maybe Kiwi lass on the W&OD that was using an e-bike while her leg recovered from a regular bicycle crash. Sounds like a great use of them to me. I’m also for it helping get folks out of cars and crowded metro trains, but this admission disturbs me:

I worry that a lot of people feel this way about regular bicycles, and a regular bicycle with an electric motor might not make them feel any safer. Might want to think of ways to address this mentality if you’re going to be trying to sell eBikes.

ParticipantDon’t know that route too well, but it looks like you could also take the Bluemont > W&OD > S.Walter Reed > NVCC > Dawes > Holmes Run

ParticipantApparently the mutant light that I found that had the cool left/right blink also does NOT have an ‘off’ setting. It goes:
Solid->Blink->Burst->Left/Right Blink
and then repeats, with no off setting. weird.
