Just to scramble things up a bit, I think the final standings should be based on the scores of the last 8 players on each team. That would reward the teams with great teamwork more than the ones with a couple of heroes.

Hmm. Seems like a good pointless prize opportunity. Didn’t someone award the “All Pulling Together” award last year?

Offense intended. But if that were the case, I think the teams should be loaded toward that. As it currently stands, the teams are based upon all members and their past mileage. A team with a few people who do lots of miles are typically paired with people who do less. If you were to use your logic, that team would be at a disadvantage before you even started (unless you are just referring to a pointless prize, then all is ok). But then, why stop at the bottom 8? Why not just pick the bottom 5?? The whole point of the competition is to be an overall team.

Phew! I was a bit worried it might be later while I’m away. But this date works out great for me. Count me in.

And I’ll be happy to sell my email for a cheaper beer than Judd is offering.

Sure. Now you post these stats, when the former #2 has been idled with the flu for the past four days! Don’t you people understand the non-written peloton etiquette of not attacking someone when they’re down?!?!?

I’m hosting a President’s Day Ride again this year. In recognition of the bicentennial of the Great State of Illinois, this year’s ride will visit sites associated with the four Presidents who have called Illinois home: Lincoln, Grant, Reagan and Obama. I’m planning just 6 stops this year. At each stop I’ll share some history of the site or individual. I’ve tried to pick sites that for the most part you probably haven’t visited. (I’ve only been to two myself). I’ll once again try to tie historical events to the present.

The official ride will meet at the Lincoln Memorial at 10:30. I plan to get rolling by 10:45. The ride will end at the Lincoln Cottage, which has a museum and also does tours of the cottage (tours are $15). I’m planning on visiting the museum. Scheduling a tour of the cottage with an unknown number of folks arriving at an unknown time will be too unwieldy, so I opted not to include it as part of the ride. If the weather is nice (it was awesome last year) I may do a half DC loop back to Virginia.

I’m planning on starting the morning by having pancakes at Lazy Mike’s in Falls Church at 8 a.m. There was a great crowd there last year.

Hope to see you one the ride.

This was my only FS ride of last year, and it was lots of fun. If the weather cooperates, I will be there again. But most likely at the Lincoln Memorial this time. I can’t (won’t) make it to Falls Church by 8 am

Here’s a few from my recent bike trip to AZ (during FS, of course).

It would be nice if I could comment on each picture, but I can’t figure that out. But here’s a bit of an explanation for each photo:

    1. How often do you see signs warning you of steep climbs?
    2. Payback the following day for going up that brutal climb from photo 1.
    3. These are homes out in the middle of the frikken desert with nothing but dirt and cactus around.
    4. An awesome biker bar (but I’m sure we would not be accepted).

J.C. W could easily, and rather stealthily, run away with this thing. By the time he hits 30K feet he’ll probably have it if he keeps at his current pace.

In the spirit of the competition, I’m always looking for rollers. What goes down must go back up type routes!

I’m with you!! I love the “what goes down, must go up” routes. It keeps things lively. Going uphill for 15 miles and then down for 15 miles isn’t quite the same.

I don’t know how to make this workable, but I think Hans is on to something. There is such a variability across devices that the best way to normalize the elevation gain is to use the same source for everyone. Correcting elevation on strava sucks, but it would suck roughly equally for everyone.

What I don’t know is if there is a way the API could communicate the rides for which the elevation has been corrected, because as far as I know, Strava doesn’t publicly ID that.

lol, I know I’m not like most people (and that statement alone should win me a prize!). But there is no way that I’m am going to let Strava do a bogus correction and cheat me out of more elevation (especially when my results are always about 10% lower than Ride with GPS). Even for a 6 pack of premium craft beer!!! My ride for today is a perfect example of how this would work. My elevation on Ride with GPS was just over 5,000′. Strava (with no correction gave me a bit over 4,500′), and using the correction (I did it through Garmin Connect since they are the same as Strava) and is was 3,200′. And as I said, I am not like most people! I have topo maps, and I look at the topo maps on Strava, and have a fairly good idea of what type of climbing I do based upon my familiarity with the roads. I regularly look at the elevation page that also shows the total ascent page, and my Garmin always reduces the total ascent based upon elevation changes. But then again, I’m just rambling on about nonsense here. I don’t think there are many people out there like me. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I was a CPA/tax person for 30+ years, so my life has been spent revolving around numbers.

I guess things were simpler when people just had Cateye’s. Then, the only issue was being off by a few tenths of a mile on a 50 mile ride.

I’ll just grin and bear it, and realize that this is just a fun/dumb game to help pass the winter months and maybe meet some new people and do things you haven’t done before. I mean, how many of you follow the sock competition? People (especially Sarah Bee) have some very cool socks!!

Although I am not in charge of this competition, SarahBee needs to be banned from posting any more of her amazingly adorable socks!!! It’s just not fair.
p.s. And just in case people think I’m serious, I’m not. (Well, except for the fact that she just has so many great socks).

If Sarah Bee doesn’t win this contest, it’s rigged!!

Seriously, she keeps coming up with the most amazing socks day after day. I guess it pays to tell your family to buy you cute socks for Christmas.

Thanks for the invite! I’ll probably hit up the WOD Sunday afternoon, but looks like I’ll probably stay local on Saturday. Alan A from another BAFS team is going to ride around Laytonsville, MD about 60 miles if anyone wants to come along.

Haha, You’ll be sorry if you tag along. But all are welcome!! Route will be determined at ride start, but it won’t be flat! Hopefully we can avg. around 16.

Laytonsville Shopping Center is a popular PPTC ride start, so if anyone wants to tag along, you can find the starting point from that.

Oh well. That contest went over quite well. What is your six-pack of choice, Rod? lol, I’ll make sure I make them extra heavy for your ride back home after the happy hour. Unless Eric W. can manage a circular route longer, it looks like you have this one won. Or unless some cutie happens to post a ride a bit closer to a circle. :)

And I guess we’ll have to wait for the possible “eye” portion of the contest until the final happy hour.

*Edit* Ooops, didn’t realize that it wasn’t a real ride and only generated by ride with GPS. However, if anyone does this ride, I’m pretty sure you all will have to fight it out for that extra .1 mile to win the prize. That’s a pretty amazing circular route.

    You almost got me, Rod!

And here is one of my rides that I did, that wouldn’t quite make it as a circle, but is sort of close-ish. Just to give you an idea of what I’ll consider a circle. I don’t want people to waste too much time on planning out a perfect circle. I’d rather people just go out and ride their bikes.
