I was interested in the 100/200, but the logistics are a little too daunting to do on my own. Plus (And most importantly) there doesn’t appear to be a jersey

There’s several states with rides across them. I really like the idea of doing it in one day. Illinois has one call RAIL. I’m actually in Georgia right now for BRAG.

What about the 100/200 north to south across Vermont? http://100-200.org/

Regarding the glass, in addition to GWMP maintenance please call USPP: 703-285-1000 and make sure they know the time you pass through the area.

The better they can refine when new glass appears, the greater the chance of catching the aashole

I assume it was cleaned up Friday, but I can say that as of this morning, Sunday 4 June, the glass was cleared off the airport bridges.

If so, then there’s new broken glass this morning when I passed through at 5:50

I’ll be on my black & green giant with my buddy on his recumbent. Still working on talking him into the full 100 instead of the metric…he’s never rode farther than about 75 and hasn’t done any 50+ distance rides in awhile so he doesn’t think he’s in shape to do a full 100. I keep pointing out the lack of elevation

Just got this response from the GWMP Superintendent.

    Good morning,

Thanks you for bringing this to our attention. I was not aware of this problem until now. I will take three actions as a result of this email; alert United States Park Police (USPP), South district ranger staff and deputy chief of maintenance. Please clarifiy one thing….I assume it’s happening at this bridge. Is that correct?

My immediate reaction is that this should be an internal coordinated effort to gather information.

As you probably know, we work very closely with USPP for law enforcement issues. If what your suggesting is true, that this is a malicious act we’re going to need to have them involved for investigative purposes.

The south district supervisor can and will inform his staff to be on the look out for this behavior. Luckily starting on June 7th, we’ll have some extra eyes and ears on the trail in the form of 4 Student Conservation Association interns. The SD supervisor directs their work and will assigned them to keep tabs on this action.

Maintenance is key, obviously for clean up, but also coordination. If we know how often the glass is laid, then cleaned, it will help to narrow the investigation.

More to come…Please, if this continues to happen, or if the pattern changes let me know. I’ll do the best I can to keep you informed of the investigation.

    Thank you,
    Alexcy Romero

I dont think I suggested it was malicious (even though that was my thought…) This is what I sent:
Hi, there is a ridiculous amount of shattered glass all over the Mount Vernon Trail on the overpasses by the airport. Can someone please clean this up? I saw multiple cyclists down fixing flat tires caused by the glass, and pedestrians are having problems getting around it since the shards are covering everything on the overpasses. This is really dangerous since there is no way around the glass. The glass is covering the trail on BOTH trail overpasses by the airport. Thanks Best, Erin

I sent back a google map with the 2 bridges starred.

I’d say it’s malicious. There’s been glass on both bridges for about two weeks. This morning the glass is new to the previous. Also, I noticed new glass on the trail under the Smith Blvd/Metro overpass.

I did a similar unofficial experiment back in 2015, counting the male and female cyclists I saw on my morning commutes between September 1 and December 4. (I stopped in December because at that point, everyone was bundled up and it was hard to quickly determine gender.) The percentage of female cyclists ranged from 12.1% to 47.6% on any given day, but the average percentage across all days came out to exactly 24%.

I would do this survey as well, but I dont have enough. fingers to both count with and hold onto my handlebars at the same time

What does it say about the world today when the comments about the WABA post degenerate to an argument about how to label the shitty behavior instead of just you know: “knock off the shitty behavior”

    Maybe too quiet…

As far as noise I thought the same thing…it was earily quiet this morning, but the number of people I passed suggested it was rather busy

I ride Madison daily and honestly don’t think it’s that bad. Sure there’s lots of tourists and tour buses, but the speed limit is 15mph. With all the cars/buses trying to park traffic is often at a stand still, but there’s plenty room for someone on a bike to get around.

I have seen this guy too but just once. Odd for sure but good luck getting this enforced. I have seen Park Police drive their motorcycles across the 14th St Bridge Path which is also a definite no-no.

The Park Police riding motorcycles on the 14th bridge path is more than likely for familiarization in case they ever need to do so for an emergency. I have no issue with that; in fact I’d like to see the police on the trail more often.

Generally today was lovely, despite being warmer than I would like given the extra mileage to hit Crystal City and need this week to get to work extra early.

However, at about 6:25am I was heading south on the MVT just south of Gravely Point and approaching the airport when I see a bike moving quite fast towards me (north bound) with little or no pedaling. “Damn electric bike,” I thought to myself until it got closer. Then I hear and quickly smelled the 2-stroke engine. That was basically a motor cycle! Person was past me and no way to even say anything. I yelled “illegal bike,” but was unlikely heard. WTF.

Was it a red frame and possibly look like a full suspension mountain bike? On May 7th a around 5pm I passed someone headed north on the MVT under the rail bridge riding a bike with what clearly sounded and smelled like a 2 stroke engine
