Hey out there; will be starting a 6mth detail with CBP at the Reagan building. any updates on bike/shower facilities and how to navigate through it all. while visiting a few weeks ago I did see cyclists in the building and I know there is a small shower room but, like a dork, I didn’t stop any of them to ask. thnX

hey out there; looks like i’ll start a 6mth detail with CBP at the Ronald Reagan Building. I’ve been commuting by bike to ICE at PCN for 8 years. Can anyone give me some insight on bike/shower facilities at the Reagan building and how to navigate through it all

Hi Emm, if offered, take it and join ICE CYCLES at the PCN. Sadly, you missed out on the last jersey order i made. You can park your bike in either level of the garage. If you are FED you have access to the small fitness center that has locker room and showers. If you are contract, you have access to a small locker room with showers on the 2nd level of parking garage. Any other questions at all or even a tour…drop me a line. V/r Adam X

Conte’s is about to open across the street from where I work – the first bike shop in Capital Riverfront. While I intend to remain loyal to Bikenetics, having a bike shop close to work should be very helpful. I note they have existing shops in ther region – do they have a good reputation?

make sure they have a FULL TIME TECH in the shop before you do anything. I wont say anything bad about the new Contes in Falls Church NOR will I say anything good. Lets just put it this way; I bought a Giant Liv for the wife in Nov and we had to take it in three times to get the shifting adjusted and it is still not right. the last time I went in I discovered the tech had returned to Richmond and they didn’t have a full time person. coincidentally? this shop is only 2-3 miles from the Fresh Bikes at Mosaic. they opened another shop down the street from the FB on Wilson and now opening a shop in DC. it is my understanding they are here to win market share back from FB. customer service and being part of the community? but, I have also heard they serve up donuts and coffee along the trail in FC where it intersects with Shreve every other Friday morning. after ‘more’ cable stretching, we’ll go back to the Contes in FC for another shifting adjustment and will probably only go back for maintenance on that bike.

On Wed Morning, I took back roads from area of West Falls Church to George Mason/VA Hospital Center to ARL Courthouse, memorial bridge, east Potomac Park to SW Waterfront. at 0700 there was little traffic and roads were not bad. because of snow, there was a BIKE LANE on Memorial Bridge. Sidewalk behind the Jefferson was not clear which meant traveling against traffic to Main St but that was only 30 yds in another snow created bike lane. I heard WOD and/or Custis were clear and i wanted to try that. Return was a bit more tricky. 14th st bridge is clear but MVT is NOT. I turned back to go to Memorial Bridge. Passable on snow/ice at 1700 but then I had to get on GW and travel around the circle because path to Cemetery was snow covered. path around cemetery to Iwo Jima is clear. Then I took back roads again through Arlington. It did look like Custis was clear in spots. When I got to corner of W and Rt 7 (near Mike Deli); the walls of snow had been plowed and looks like WOD in Falls Church is clear. I might try the WOD this morning but will cut off at Rossly to avoid what I am sure is still a snow covered MVT.

although, at these temps and ICE it is probably safe to be on metro today. sounds like the call to avoid the cattle cars on Wed was a good one!!!

Is this serious? Sounds good to me.

Followed up with Paul Stoddart; Open House on 23 Jan to discuss improvements
As for the W&OD, that effort is in the planning/grant application phase. There’s an upcoming meeting on Saturday, January 23 (flyer attached). The project page, with the latest draft plan, can be found here: http://www.FallsChurchVa.gov/WODMasterPlan. The City has grant applications in for next fiscal year (starting July 2016) to begin work on plazas and two of the crosses. We should know about those funds in the next few months.

In more seriousness I have added vodka to my bottles, but I think to really get it to not freeze you need to add a lot of vodka; my “couple shots” of vodka didn’t seem to make much difference. And I felt that showing up to work after taking a couple shots of vodka was maybe not the most exemplary decision.

Back when cycling was all casual, I also used a camelbak (on mtb only of course!) and I did find that blowing back into the tube helped, as Tania suggested, but when I switched to riding pretty much exclusively with bottles I found they were much better in winter — and really do last a long time (~1 hour?) in very cold temps before freezing through. Usually my body’s extremities are freezing through around the same time the bottles freeze through, so that worked out great.

Hey…how do you stay hydrated in sub-freezing temps. I switch from water bottle to CamelBak when it drops below 32f. I have a insulation sleeve on the drink hose. but, that does not prevent the line from freezing on days like this week when temps are sitting at 16f.

How do you do it. I can’t be the only one trying to stay hydrated in these temps.

Thanks for the input. At first with the comics and the vodka mix options I thought I had discovered the most perplexing bike question of the century. Evan asked a guy on the commute this morning and he looked at me like I was speaking wookie!

Sounds like the insulated bottle with lukewarm support water or tea is the place to start.

My commute from falls church to the SW waterfront is about an hour an I usually go through at least a bottle. Thought I was going to dehydrate on Tuesday when my line froze.

you will be VERY surprised to find how refreshing it is! I lived and cycled in Germany for 9 years and the first time I was offered one post HOT ride I thought ‘no way am I messing up a perfectly good hefeweizen’ but I did and did it hit the spot.

recommend just using straight lemonade; mix it with your bier…during the summer I typically have bottles of Yuengling in the fridge and a pitcher of lemonade. not sure how the lemonade would mix with a US type ale and I’d rather mix the lemonade with a low cost Yuengling than my hefes.

I’ve seen bottle radler locally…maybe the big bier/wine place

if you want to go even more extreme…my family in spain drinks coke mixed with red wine…’un calimocho’…wouldn’t take that after a ride but on a hot day…also quite tasty

this is a quote I received from a guy in VACycling…I had been seeing Rob at the ProShop for 3 years and he disappeared:

I was on site nearly 10 years ago soon after DHS birth; it was previously Navy populated and there was a gym and shower; don’t know about bike facilities; if you don’t have contacts up there drop me a line at adam.x.piceno@ice.dhs.gov later and maybe I can help you

    Liz;

Hillary Zahm from Macerich/Tysons Corner Center is donating a bike rack to Timber Lane Elementary School. They donated one to Freedom Hill last year. I got the initial plug from Jeff Anderson and worked with Hillary and the Principal to get this relationship started. Hillary now wants to partner with T’Lane to promote this relationship and get at least 100 people to register at their Bike to Work Day Pit Stop. If 100 register, they will donate the rack to T’Lane. I cycle commute from WFC to SW Waterfront so a trip to Tysons is certainly not on my way but I will register in support of T’Lane. I may even take the day off to help man their table. in any case, I am going to assume this effort is related to the effort you are talking about and an overall attitude change towards cycling from the Tyson’s group. i’ll keep you posted on the TLane relationship and, oh, I can’t claim to be a Tysons commuter. adamxpiceno@Verizon.net (FABB)
