ParticipantArlington is great for a bike commuter. And if you look in South Arlington, it is much more affordable. The schools are great too- don’t let worries about non-English speakers scare you. My kids’ school is half “English learners” and it is wonderful.

ParticipantI love to feel like I’m cheating “the man” by using my commute to exercise.

ParticipantWe are actually looking to sell one of our bike trailers (or whatever they are properly called- the kids’ size bike extension that hooks onto the adult bike) if anyone wants to buy it. Our older son is too big for it now.
They are fun to use with a kid although I was always nervous about going down steep hills or around sharp curves- often we would walk those. And if your kid doesn’t pedal all the time it can feel like towing a big sack of potatoes.

ParticipantIn my case, I stopped riding my bike to work for 8 long years because I was bringing first one, then two kids into daycare at my office downtown. There just wasn’t any way I was going to make it up the huge hill going home to Arlington towing a kid- I just don’t have the strength. I didn’t know about electric assisted bikes back then, though- might have tried them if I had known. But then there is also the weather issue- it’s one thing for me to ride 45 minutes each way in cold and/or rain, another thing for a kid (even in a covered trailer.)

ParticipantMystery still unsolved. Bike mechanic says- no problem with tires, alignment, rim tape, etc.
My new theory is- my husband is secretly under-inflating my tires in the hope that I will think something is wrong with my bike and let him go bike shopping for me.acorn
ParticipantBe a good cyclist- don’t be a “shanda fur die drivers!”

ParticipantYou are all so tough! As I sit in traffic on the 14th St Bridge, I will wave at you jealously as you zip by, and turn up the a/c in your honor.

ParticipantI go through Fort Myer all the time, it is very pleasant and convenient. If you are a Fed (don’t have to be military), you can show your ID and they will wave you through, otherwise you have to show other ID and they log you in. (No idea why – doesn’t seem like this would somehow enhance security.)

ParticipantOh, crud. I use that gate all the time.
Does anyone in the forum use the Henderson Hall gate that was mentioned? Where does that take you if you exit from it? Or am I just going to have to figure out a way to come into the city not via Fort Myer?acorn
ParticipantThe Memorial Bridge south sidewalk is open again, with no obstructions. Yay!
acorn
ParticipantAre you sure you’re talking about Memorial Bridge? I ride over every day. There are sidewalks at the end of it on both sides, both ends. On the north side coming into DC you do have to make a sharp turn to remain on the sidewalk.
You do have to go around the circle because of the traffic pattern but the side of the Lincoln Memorial that faces the Mall is closed to cars.acorn
ParticipantSigh… still closed as of Monday morning. At least they now have a sign posted far enough away that you can move to the other side.
acorn
ParticipantActually it looked to me this morning (Friday) that the work on the south sidewalk might be completed today, if they are just going to do the same work they did on the north sidewalk. I’ll have to check on my way home.
