This one is being justified with the dubious rationale that “Sidewalks will be more comfortable for walking due to buffering provided by the new bike lanes.” This is similar to, but more vague than the “Improving pedestrian safety” excuse for the bike lane along Wilson Boulevard @ Bluemont. Has anyone out there seen any data to indicate that sidewalks in the county are dangerous and anxiety-inducing, or is this one of those post-fact things?

I’m probably going to have to arrive by car. Bleh. Training in Frederick that day and I won’t have time to get home and bike there. Still trying to figure out how I can get my 30 miles a day that week without the bike commute.

I think that’s going to be one of my Frederick days. If so, I might attempt a work/happy hour/band practice hat trick. If my schedule settles out that way, you could bike to Frederick in the morning and I could give you a ride back in the evening.

I’m sure nobody except me noticed this, but that is an old bike. Notice the skip-tooth chainring for the 1/2″ pitch chain!!! too cool!

The caption for the photo on Sheldon Brown’s site identifies it as a 1916 Mead Ranger. And he has a page about it.

How about some bicycle related songs on the accordion on your bike?

Assuming the ice and yuck melt away as forecast, I hope to join the Alexandria parade tonight. There might even be a rare sighting of Mrs. Accordioneur and her recumbent.

I plan on attending unless I get stuck going to Frederick that day. It’s worth missing band practice for.

I’m just back from NYC, where I spotted a broad range of improvised bar mitts made from materials including oven mitts, grocery bags over towels, and taped up newspapers.

I like the helmet cover idea. Not everyone wears a jersey – and many others will be bundled up so their jerseys won’t be visible – but almost everyone wears a helmet. I pretty fond of the moose reflectors, too, though they’d be harder to spot.

And as an aside, as a new Volvo owner I really, really like Pegamoose!

Thanks to everyone who came out! I could trick y’all into coming to my next gig by saying that it was a holiday party for a custom bike shop … except that the name “Hardcore Choppers” might give away the fact that they deal in the other kind of bike.

Who is the Freezing saddles data guru? I have an idea or two for pointless prizes but need to determine if what we pull out of Strava can support them.

“Maven” is one of those Yiddish words that’s entered American English vernacular. If you were old, as I am, you might remember the Vita Herring “Herring Maven” ads from eons ago.

What counts is not the voltage but the current that is being passed.

Bob, you’ll note that I described LEDs as “low voltage, low power devices.” If something is low voltage and low power, it is also low current (you remember Ohm’s law, yes?). I could have said “low voltage, low power, low current devices” but that wouldn’t have added any information. Also, voltage does matter to a certain extent, since low voltage electricity will not overcome skin resistance and penetrate the skin. I suppose you could postulate a case where a cyclist was in an accident significant enough to shatter the helmet and associated electronics, break the skin, and embed the exposed power wires into the skull. I agree that in this case there could be a risk of electric shock, but it would probably be the least of the victim’s concerns.

CPSC Certification: Has anyone even looked recent bicycle helmet recalls by the Consumer Product Safety Commission? I can say there are some. These “certified” helmets are hazards to the wearer.

I don’t know much about how helmets are tested, but what you’re describing here is not an issue with this helmet in particular, but is (if valid) a systemic issue with bike helmet testing.
