There’s a way to go, have a good time, and keep your hands in appropriate places — volunteer.

Here is a piece I wrote about cycling and recovery from cancer.

Thanks to acc for inspiring me to write it, and Mark Blacknell for the photo (and who gets a photo credit).

I understand. So sorry you have to deal with this. There is nothing worse than being injured. Stay well.

Oh, noooo, little black dresses and biking *do* mix. :)

    Megabeth is absolutely correct!

I won’t ride the entire way, for heaven’s sake I’d have to start out the night before, but I’ll ride up from the Smithsonian stop.

As for riding in a dress: When I leave work, I just want to go home. I don’t want to change, I don’t want to drag all my stuff out again. I run out of the building like I’m on fire. Most of the time I ride home in what I wore that day.

And let me tell you, I’ve met the most interesting people when I ride home in a dress and heels. ;)

My dress for this event is on permanent back order. Apparently child labor isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. But I’ll dig something out of my closet.

Not by plan, but I’ve taken several bikes on Metro this winter. I gave up on elevators late one Saturday night downtown by myself in the cold when I couldn’t find the Metro Center station elevator. After that, I’ve just carried them on the escalators. Station managers have carried my bike down for me once or twice. :-)

Lighter bikes are easier and a messenger bag helps free up your hands.

I push my bike backwards as far as it will go at the end of a car and either stand with it or hook my arm through the frame if I have a seat.

From the end of the Orange Line, West Falls Church is the easiest to manage with a bike because parking is so close to the station entrance. It’s much easier than either Dunn Loring or Vienna.

Saw two bike patrol volunteers on the MVT (one twice, going each way), then on the 4MRT at West Glebe there were two park police (unknown jurisdiction) stopped with teir bikes on the spur over to the stop light. Last night around 9 pm, I watched from my second floor window as a park ranger drove a SUV heading east. The driver pulled over into the power pylon bypass as a cyclist was headed directly towards the vehicle. All of a sudden we’re seeing more official presence on the trails. Not a bad thing at all.

*cough* Consularrider, seems to me you might be the Green Hornet, or Superman. :-) You’re all over it.

That would be my version of 24 hours of booty.

Consularrider, here’s 24 hours of booty: This is my friend, Coach Gleason. He lives around here. You may have encountered him last summer at the “games.” He rode 340 miles in 24 hours. Seriously. Oh yeah, he’s well into his 50s.

I thought about it too, but have commited to bike marshal the 108 mile route for the Tour de Cure in Reston on the 2nd. Have to be there by 6 am and it’s an hour ride from home.

Guess you’ll just have to pedal faster….

I’m Ann, bikepetal, formally known as Rhinestone Cowgirl. I ride a bunch of bikes and am still looking for the one that fits me best.
I commute to work when my schedule allows me.
    I like hills.
I like to take a tourist map, rent a bike, and see what happens.
If it has wheels, I’ll ride it.

I highly recommend it, Ron does a good job. Just remember, Arlington is not flat!

This is an awesome, fun ride. If you are shaky on riding in traffic, this is a great idea. The pace is easy, you will have plenty of time and no sense of being pressured to ride hard. It is the best community ride of the spring.

    And who doesn’t love libraries?

In fact, a year after this ride I went for a run, ran out of water, became lost and stumbled into one of the libraries. Because I had been on the ride I recognized where I was and went inside to cool down and get some water.
