I’m willing to go to the store to buy a bushel of breadcrumbs BUT how close are those Indy cars flying down the FFX Parkway? What got to me in the end yesterday was the incessant noise of the very fast cars right over my shoulder. Intellectually, I realized they probably wouldn’t kill me but the sound reminded me of the acoustics in a cheap motel next to the freeway (not that I would know firsthand, but I’ve heard). If I want the Wilson Blvd experience I can get there and the food’s better, at least there’s a trade-off. The best I could do along Route 123 was a shriveled up hot dog at a gas station. Not worth the irritation.

Um Dirt, you may not know I am directionally challenged. However, the car noise was making me so jumpy yesterday I bailed out onto some side streets and noticed:
    1. They were empty.
    2. The scary noise went away.
    3. I eventually found a hole in a fence and pushed Spartacus through into a rear parking lot of University Mall.

I think I have a good block of time today so that if (WHEN) I get lost I will have enough time to recover and still pick up my offspring on-time.

But I need to find some routes out there because I plan to ride after class. So thank you.

CCrew you might as well be talking gibberish, and that’s a reflection on me not you, FFX County Parkway? Oh that sounds delightful. I can’t picture it.

Funny you should mention brightness… In the usual course of things, like reading texts inside movie theaters, I keep my phone fairly dim. To me the thing is like looking directly into the sun. But for the bike I need to turn up the setting to “nuclear blast.” It’s easily readable and thank God or else I would have dumped myself looking at it as I was hopping weeds and crevasses on that “trail/donkey path.” But, it drinks the battery like a frat boy chugging beer so I will probably break down and buy another battery/charger because I can’t just drain it all on a ride. The kids might need to reach me, bill collectors, parole officers, etc.

Everyone here is happy to help but we need more information. Do you have a bike? What kind is it? How much are you used to riding? Where, in general terms, are you riding?

    Best wishes,

Listen if you change your mind about a ride, it’s no problem. This may yet hit you, doesn’t seem like it so far. If it were me I’d be crouched under my desk sobbing.

Oh Dear God. Thank God you weren’t shot. Were the police helpful? Please, please consider hitting that part of your commute a little later.

Ran into one of my friends who lives in NW DC and uses Capital Bikeshare. His points were:

    1. The yearly fee of $75 is great.
    2. He has saved at least twice as much by not taking cabs.
    3. At night it is hard to find a space to return the bike in NW.
    4. He asks for more stations in NW.

    Hope this is helpful feedback,

Hmm, well it was a nice 72 degrees in the weight room this evening. As for pictures, gee whiz, my crop top is on lay-away and they don’t make a kilt in my size. I will ride tomorrow because not to ride will result in a great disturbance in the Force. I’m happier when I ride even if I don’t get to go fast. I may ask for a next of kin notification form and a release from liability though.

The TDF was fantastic. Period. Hands down.

    Don’t forget about your phone.
I usually carry mine in my back jersey pocket and that’s fine until I start pouring water over myself.
The sad thing is I was pouring the water down my back so as not to make a spectacle of myself pouring it down my front.
The phone seems mostly ok this afternoon.

Lesson learned: Just go for the whole spectacle thing.

In order to avoid the worst of it I was riding around last night just before twilight. I would like to alert all deer sympathizers that the little critters are out during this time crowding the W&O trail in Vienna just like the Speedo runners at TDF. As if the heat weren’t bad enough.

That is a very good point and reminded me how riding my bike gets me out on the block talking to my neighbors. Granted, I am viewed as The Crazy Woman who rides around on a bike in the heat and the cold wearing funny clothes. Despite the friendly teasing, it’s been good to be seen on Spartacus and helps me keep tabs on my neighbors without reaching for my binoculars. I don’t pretend to believe any of them will get on a bike but at least they see someone who does and can act as a resource if they decide to give it a try.
