ParticipantOh, I almost forgot the best photo. As you can see, people take the DecoBikes everywhere. http://www.flickr.com/photos/62208072@N08/6578277951/

ParticipantHey, thanks for the warm welcome. I have been having so much fun riding the bike routes Vienna is working on, I discovered some new ways around the town and some scary ones too. It was a great opportunity to meet other people in the biking community, the meeting ran well and was interesting. Look forward to seeing you at the next one.

ParticipantI think it’s very likely I will attend. (Working on an entire ensemble.)

ParticipantI wish that each time a bike is sold in Arlington County the new owner would leave the store with a bike map of Arlington County and a flyer (in English or Spanish) that contains the following information:
1. Where to find bike safety classes.
2. Where to find bike maintenance classes.
3. An introduction to Bike Arlington.
4. An introduction to WABA.
5. A link to this forum.ann

ParticipantI’m looking forward to it.

Oh my. Of course I’d be overjoyed to post pictures like that but I’m sure Tim Kelley, the forum administrator, would never allow such a thing.

ParticipantHere’s hoping they used a wide-angle lens.

ParticipantMr. President may not be aware of his new name. It was a joint project. Deals were made.
Henceforth Mr. Blacknell shall be known as: The WABA Poobah.
I’m so delighted.

ParticipantI’m sticking with what works for me, Nite Rider MiNewt.350 Cordless. I can charge it with a USB port, and I don’t have to worry about batteries running out unexpectedly. I know myself well enough that it is unlikely that I’d remember to carry extra batteries with me.
I take it off the bike, walk into the house and plug it in. Yes, it is relatively expensive but the peace of mind is worth it to me. I never thought I would say I like riding in the dark, but I do. But I want to be responsible and visible.

December 15, 2011 at 7:05 pm in reply to: WABA Holiday Party – December 14 – Big Bear Cafe – 6:00 to 11:00 #933678acc
ParticipantIt was elbow to elbow, shoulder to shoulder, cheek to cheek at the WABA Holiday Party yesterday evening. The spiked cider was hot, smelled great, and did I mention spiked? While I did not get lucky last evening — I did not win any of the bike raffles, I did come home with several consolation prizes.
I flashed my WABA membership card and was immediately gifted with my very own bike bell with the emblem “New Belgium Brewing” on the top. It’s too pretty to put up on Ebay. I also received a one inch square reflective device to attach to a zipper. It is bright orange and has the WABA logo imprinted in white. I’m sure a reflective zipper pull could come in quite handy if you found yourself in a dimly lit restroom.
The crowd was in good holiday cheer and a fun time was had by all.
I did not bike there because the only thing worse than me wandering around in the dark on foot, is me riding around on unfamiliar streets in the dark on my bike. I took Metro and enjoyed a pleasant stroll along Florida Avenue.

December 15, 2011 at 12:10 pm in reply to: Bike Buttons Featuring a Nifty DC Design– Profits Go to WABA #933648acc
ParticipantAnd yet another reason to buy a highly sought after *cheap* bike button featuring sharrows/bikes/DC—
They are a LIMITED EDITION.
Just like the Franklin Mint, whose products become treasured family heirlooms, the creator of these buttons has decided to break the mold as of December 31st, 2011. After that they will no longer be available for sale to the public.
So that means just like Beanie Babies, Pokemon Cards, and die cast model cars, these buttons are about to become highly collectable and their value is sure to appreciate over time. I’m sure by mid June a button that formerly sold for the low, low price of $5.00 will be worth at least $5.07 — and the possibilities for appreciation are endless.
Not only are the buttons attractive, easy to wrap, and inexpensive gifts for your bike loving friends, profits go to WABA.

Bike Buttons – a wise addition to your investment portfolio. Act today, don’t miss out on this once in a lifetime opportunity.

ParticipantI think we’re really getting the hang of this light giveaway thing. Bike Forum Volunteers Make It Fun!
We’ve perfected the schill: “Free! Absolutely Free Lights! For You! Roll Over Here!”
We’ve got moves: As soon as a cyclist stops we surround them like a pack of hyenas moving in on a fresh kill. Some take the front, some take the rear — it’s just like a NASCAR pit crew — in less than ten seconds we’ve mounted (the bike) with several sets of lights.
We got the wave: Bend at the elbow and call out — “Thanks for stopping by to get lit. We appreciate it!”
Such an excellent night. Thanks Bike Arlington, and Pete Beers.

ParticipantCongratulations! What has been the highlight of this year’s commuting? I know as most who read along with the bouncing ball what the bad part was — being robbed at gunpoint.
annDecember 11, 2011 at 4:45 pm in reply to: Save the date? Holiday markets ride to DC, Saturday Dec 10. #933536acc
ParticipantHad a great ride yesterday, many thanks to Greenbelt for planning the route and bringing the cookies that made it possible for me to find the motivation to get out of bed on a cold morning. I met so many intelligent, funny people it was wonderful and the Bike Forum folks are even better looking than they are online.
Christmas shopping on a bike forced me to be more disciplined. I learned several things.
1. Credit cards don’t weigh much and fit easily into a backpack, bring them.
2. I discovered my love and regard for people I buy holiday gifts for has a limit of four ounces. I’m not carrying anything that weighs more than that.
3. I also discovered my love and regard for people does not extend as far as I thought it did. Some people didn’t make the final cut, my backpack is only so big, my back is only so strong. Therefore, I wish to extend fond wishes and holiday greetings to Dirt, Tim Kelley, and Blacknell. Remember, it is not the size of the present but the thought that counts.
4. Everyone else will receive bike T-shirts I found in the markets yesterday. Grandma is getting a lovely one that has a big blue bicycle with a mustache where the handlebars should be. I know she’ll love it.
5. The funniest moment yesterday was when about 20 of us tried to crowd into a very small coffee shop, I believe that is the closest I will ever get to being part of a flashmob.Happy Holiday Trails,
