I’ve been thinking about doing this race…actually I was pulled in on a “you should do it” dare, from one of my co-workers. Being that I’ve never raced period (road, mtb or cross), I’m starting to re-think my idea to race Cat 5 in this race. I was stoked to do it until I looked at a video course preview online: http://vimeo.com/54553281 . Based on that, the course looks INSANE, especially the bridge sections. What do you all think? Should I do it? Should I do my first ever race on this course that looks crazy? Or am I being a p*ssy?
Look. Are you likely to survive the next year? Is there some dire sword hanging over your head? If not, come out and watch the race. Walk the course. Observe the bike handling skills. Enjoy the atmosphere. Few things in life are now or never. This isn’t that.

ParticipantAnother place to look for hard to find items is Etsy. You can tell from the excitement on his face that Rambo is thrilled with his new hat from Etsy ~ $12.

ParticipantAh yes, another moment in the life of What Would Pete Do! Thanks Pete for always taking the high road and I don’t just mean hills.

ParticipantNot to defend, but to explain. There have been times when I’ve been so tired, so sick of riding, so far from home, that I’ve tried to grab onto a wheel just to make it a few more miles down the trail. No offense to you but “you” seemed competent and not frightening. Therefore, I hung on your wheel long enough to get closer to home. I considered “you” safe and reliable.

ParticipantPete covered the Ws of winter weather riding with an emphasis on wearing layers: wicking (a base layer that breathes and fits close to the body), warmth (a layer with some loft to it for warmth), and wrain (how to stay dry and comfortable in the wind and rain).
My own interpretation of the three Ws.

ParticipantCleaning up dinner and heading out. Ha. In my car. I can buy more stuff that way.
Thank you for doing this, Pete.November 7, 2013 at 5:00 pm in reply to: How to Dress for Winter Cycling Seminar — November 7th at 6:30pm #985488acc
ParticipantI grew up on Shreve Road and ride it fairly often in the street. The only part that gives me pause is the hill after Shelby Lane and that’s mostly because my mother crashed there the one time she borrowed by bike when I was a kid. I’m more skittish about Gallows Road directly in front of Dunn Loring Metro because of the construction going on and the Kiss and Ride Circle of Confusion and Regret.

ParticipantSo, Dress Up Funtime Starts at 6:30? Is this a formal presentation with a group of 20-somethings wandering around in winter wear kit, or was that just my rich and vivid fantasy world? In other words, is there a formal presentation or can I just drop in and look around before drifting off for pizza across the street?

ParticipantI’d be happy to help out if you need an extra hand, say with the dressing rooms.
There will be bib shorts, yes?

All right, allow me to be the voice of someone with a maternal instinct here.
I understand this is a relatively technical course as cyclocross goes. Could I interest you in maybe sitting out this year, coming to watch as a spectator, practicing all next summer, attending a few ‘cross workshops and being able to do much more than just complete the race next year?
Of course I believe all that stuff we won’t talk about is in your past. I just don’t want to tempt fate unnecessarily . . .

Liz, sshhhh.
I’d like to point out you did 25 miles on a mountain bike with how much prep?
And didn’t you drag me around for 120 miles with about 48 hours advance notice last January, in the dark. It’s December, they have all winter to heal.

ParticipantHere. This is a good presentation of the course. There is a cardiac stopping hill and a sphincter closing descent. Not for the faint of heart.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1cJKjroOFw

ParticipantI have a special place in my heart for folks on suicide missions. I promise not to slap anyone (at least not in the first hour) and will come out to watch the paunchy and infirm at a ridiculous nearly-dawn hour because I’m old and don’t sleep much. Furthermore, I promise to be equipped with beer and cupcakes for the few, the sad, the miserable middle-age people who race before 9:00 am.
You are my people.
However, I will not help anyone back onto their bike because I might throw my back out or get muddy, eeww. But I will pull out my phone, dial 9-1-1, and wave in the direction of someone who can provide you with emergency services. Don’t let my nurse outfit fool you.
If you happen to hit your head and fall into an unconscious state, I’ll drink your beer and eat your cupcake.

ParticipantAsking myself WWDD has kept me out of a lot of trouble over the years and has led to an interesting assortment of bike costumes.
You’re right, Dirt always finds a non confrontational way of promoting bike safety and biking in general when he interacts with non cyclists.
It strikes me there should be a Dirt Appreciation Day and perhaps an annual award for someone who acts most like Dirt as a positive cycling advocate.
And the award should be something pink.
