First time I’ve ever ridden in Anacostia. [….] I think the neighborhood will take off eventually, the way that NoMa, Gallery Place, Metro Center and the Capitol Riverfront neighborhoods have. Those areas used to be quite distressed, even Metro Center, but now they are much livelier and developed.
I ride in Anacostia and other East of the River neighborhoods quite a bit. Interestingly, I’ve always found the drivers (on weekends) to be much kinder/safer than they generally are in NW and Virginia. There are some great hills to hit too. And I’ve never had any issues with feeling unsafe (and have actually had more problems closer to home around the Potomac Ave and Eastern Market metros).
And there are some neighborhoods that have seriously nice and well-priced housing stock given how close in to the city it is. With Brookland, Trinidad, and Eckington et al. all experiencing considerable appreciation, I don’t think it will be too long before people get over the psychological hurdle of the river and start looking to buy out that way. Especially younger folks who aren’t thinking about schools yet.

ParticipantThe Daily Rider sees lots of belt drive bikes and did a great job building me a wheelset that included a weird-sized electric motor hub. And they were highly accommodating of highly-specific thoughts regarding the build (read: my many neuroses!). It’s a bit of a haul from Fairfax, but would give you an excuse to visit one of the cool restaurants/bars on H St (my favorite, hands down, is the Queen Vic).

ParticipantAfter a couple of interactions where I would really have liked to have it, I started carrying a frame-mounted pepper spay. It’s easily accessible on the fly from the top tube.

ParticipantThere was a crowd of excited people in front of the Supreme Court this morning. They’re sure going to be disappointed when they find out that the raisins/takings clause case was handed down earlier this week!

ParticipantThe flooded stairs at the Lincoln Memorial with the CaBis is a great (and hilarious) shot! Poor tourists.

ParticipantNext federal shutdown I dearly hope that they close off every road maintained by NPS in the DC region.
Also, bloody AAA.

ParticipantI frequently see folks fishing the Potomac from off of the C&O towpath. You also see people fishing in the canal, but I have no idea how productive/fun that would be.
EDIT: Also, I see a lot of people fishing the Anacostia from the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail. Diamond Teague Park (just south of the Nats stadium) and all along Anacostia Park seem to be popular spots.

Great build! I have that exact same LeMond for my all ’rounder bike.

Have you tried iMovie?
I have not, but will have to borrow my wife’s Mac and give it a go. Thanks!

You never know when a governor might need to jump into action…
Governors should be on their guard. When they come to DC to “jump into action” it occasionally results in embarrassing press conferences and their state getting a new governor.

ParticipantI just got the GoPro Hero (the $120 version), which I’ve been very happy with so far. You can make out license plates easily enough and the sound pickup is better than expected. Battery life is…fine…I guess, relative to what the internet tells me most of these little cameras can do.
What I could really use now is advice on editing software. Does anybody use anything other than the stock stuff that came with your camera?

ParticipantI’ve been coveting this new Chinese carbon cross bike with discs and thru axels. My concern is that at ~6’4″ (with long legs and a short torso) I wouldn’t be a particularly good fit on the 58cm. And that the frame has a fairly steep headtube angle and short headtube height.
Yours is a very nice looking frame! Can’t wait to hear how your build goes and your new bike rides!

Ditto, also with a few years anec-data.

2) How in the world does it stay inflated? So that the person inside can breathe, air must be going in and out so how the heck….
My neighbor wore one of those inflated costumes for Halloween last year. It had what looked like a computer’s cooling fan built into it that ran continuously to keep it inflated. I think it took a handful of 9V batteries. And because it was airtight-ish with elastic around the wrists, ankles and neck, he said it got pretty hot pretty quickly.
So I’m more curious how Duck Guy can see!?!

ParticipantVenting is 30% of the purpose of the internet! The other 70% is comprised mostly of cat videos, puppy videos, and internecine warring between Team Cat and Team Dog.
