ParticipantI’ve often used my helmet’s straps to make an impromptu sort of lock. If you use the straps to clip the frame and rear wheel to something it can deter a casual opportunist or at least slow down a determined thief. Also provides a little psychological reassurance that you at least did something.

That’s crazy, of course they do!

ParticipantHis postings to a forum (much like this one!) were just so damning wrt his state of mind, I think I’d have pled out too.
“I was already way too committed to stop … I couldn’t see a line through the crowd and I couldn’t stop, so I laid it down and just plowed through the crowded crosswalk in the least-populated place I could find,”
Just wow…

ParticipantAhhh!

ParticipantI’ve never done this ride, but someone from work (who strong-armed me into doing the Culpeper century in October!) extended a general invite to join him on it sometime. What sort of a pace do the various factions within the group keep? And what sort of “shenanigans” should I be on the lookout for toward the back of the pack? Not DC Bike Party type foolishness I take it…

ParticipantI used to live in Crystal City and always found Eads to be an easy route. It doesn’t have a bike lane along the whole route, but does have fairly generous width. However I used it evenings and weekends rather than commuting hours.

ParticipantAfter I got out of school and started regularly commuting in the dark, my wife got me a Lazer Urbanize because she liked the integrated blinkies.
She said, “You are not allowed to get a head injury so long as we have such a gigantic mortgage on your brain,” in reference to my student loans.

ParticipantDid I read correctly that the serial number was in fact his name, since it’s a custom?
Way to go, in any case!

Last week I caught this impressive lady climbing up Capitol Hill:
That’s a friend of mine! She’s a mutual funds lawyer and hasn’t missed a day’s bike commute in over a year. She’s usually on a stylin’ Pashley I believe.

ParticipantThanks for posting this! It’s a great read and hopefully reached an new audience.

ParticipantSo I got rear-ended on the commute home yesterday…by a runner…in the bike lane!
I was second in line waiting for a motorcade to clear 15th and Penn. When we started up with the light I signaled left and moved to turn, then suddenly felt two hands planted squarely on my back pushing me forward/down. Within a second or two worth of squealing of brakes and blurted expletives I turned to see a wee little runner looking deeply ashamed. She’d been trying to pass all the backed-up bike and pedestrian traffic outside of the bike lane and had to hit/shove me to arrest her momentum.
I think she muttered an apology but didn’t quite get the volume right with her headphones in. Whatever…thank goodness she wasn’t a big dude or I’d have gone down hard.

This game is awesome! It’s fortunate that “____ ____ on CaBi” works out to five syllables. Have you considered doing 15mph readings to share your genius with the source of your inspiration?

Not really.
Thanks for your thoughts! I’m generally looking for a good deal on a 60-62cm Ti or steel road frame, and many of the frames I’ve seen have been in the ballpark of that complete bike. The build definitely underwhelms. I’ll keep looking

ParticipantSorry to hear about your loss. I had some bikes swiped from my old building’s garage a few years ago and it still rankles to think about them.
If you’re interested, I’ve got a ’04 LeMond Poprad CX bike built up similarly to your purloined Vaya that I’ve been toying with selling. My new shorter commute is on a cargo bike, so it hasn’t seen enough use lately.
It’s also a 60cm and is outfitted with hammered Honjo fenders, a Nitto rack, Dura Ace drivetrain, bell, etc.
So if you’re looking for a turn-key solution to get back on the road quickly, it might be a good fit. I’m happy to take some pictures or host a test ride if you might be interested.
