I was thinking of one with it’s own wheels that wouldn’t need to be moved on and off a truck or trailer.

With a ramp at the back, to roll the bikes on and off.

No later than 4:30 p.m., probably closer to 4:00 p.m. (I don’t want to be first, but I’m running some errands this afternoon and could be there just about anytime.)

This has me thinking a lot. I really dont think another swag-surfing event is going to result in the N+1 person becoming a bike commuter. One of the most common things I hear is, “Oh, I started bike commuting because Joe down the hallway came in every morning in his bike gear, we got talking, and I decided to try it…”

This. I think our increase is a combination of this and some younger people working for us. With one exception, I think all the other bike commuters are under 30, at least under 35. They’re active and once they realize they can do it — my bike is in my cubicle, so I get route questions — they give it a try. In the last two years, it’s no longer uncommon to see a bike in someone’s cubicle or underneath the stairs on the first floor. There’s even a bike rack outside — “appropriated” a couple of months ago — which usually has at least one or two bikes in it.

They’re all still pretty much “fair weather” commuters, though. I sometimes wonder if that’s easier to do because none of them have committed to riding full time. If they have an excuse — an errand, appointment, etc. — they’re quick to drive, rather than figure out the logistics of riding.

Have you tried riding a bike in a skirt? It’s not easy! ;)

It depends on how short it is.

Thanks, dudes, this is good advice and I’m going to give these a try. I don’t fancy being killed on Army Navy Drive by an idiot in an SUV yakking on his celfone. My mom would miss me. Mike

Because your mom’s more careful when talking on her cell phone? Oh, you mean she’d miss you becuse you were killed — never mind.

The print (or e-Replica version), on the third page of the Metro section, has a different headline (“Trail-blazing technology for bicyclists”) and lacks the picture.

It gets about a third of my morning commute using the default settings. Some of the alternatives, such as suggesting Southgate Road over Columbia Pike, I can understand. (After all, there’s no setting for time of day.) I’m not sure why it likes going down the Mall, unless it’s trying for as much off the road travel as possible.

Sliding the adjuster to about 74% “Quick” does come very close to my afternoon commute. The big difference between the two route — which it picked up — is Memorial Bridge vs. George Mason Memorial Bridge. In the afternoon, I’m in a hurry to get home and the George Mason is the first bridge I hit.

Twice, this summer, I’ve encoutnered small NPS tractors on the bridge, heading east. At least they stopped so you coul squeeze by them.

    …on a Friday.

I’d suggest a Tuesday (or Monday). I’ve always thought that getting a first timer to ride the second time is the trick. Once is a an “event” and it’s easier to convince people to do it. I would think it’s easier to get them to ride the next day, rather than after a weekend, especially on a Monday. (Get them to do it a few times and it’s easier on Monday.)

They are also only counting “their” bike racks. At Ballston, for example, there are a couple of racks closer to the escalators than the “official” racks.

Super scary thought? I was once a licensed school bus driver.

I think that’s just a “scary thought.” A “super scary thought” would be finding out you were actually driving a school bus. (A school bus with kids — live kids — would be up in the “terrifying” region.)
