Participant31 is the new 28? Been riding S-Ones today which probably measure out around 31. No discernible difference to me other than more confidence cornering + comfort. Of course, the smooth frame and nice wheels make a difference too.

I have been using G-One Speed (new name for S-One); they are nice, though I am not sure if they are worth the price premium compared to the 28mm Pro One. Maybe they are a bit more puncture resistant? They aren’t much bigger on 18mm internal-width rims and they do feel a bit slower. But I like them and those will be my tires this summer. They feel very grippy, but I haven’t pushed it on wet pavement.

ParticipantIt makes want you cry for all the bike frames wasted on skinny tires due to fashion trends. It’s amazing how easy it is to find a road bike with wider clearance compared to just a few years ago.

The original stuff is well used, scratched up from time and some small and large splats but still fully functional. This bike is not a sunny Sunday bike. It is a daily driver. After almost 28,000 miles the only DI-2 parts I replaced were the jockey wheels on the RD. The battery is still working fine. It will be heading off to its next tour of duty on the Rain bike when a set of used/cheap brifters pops up on craigs list or the like.
Shimano did well in making as much of the existing stuff compatible with the newer stuff. To convert an older 10 speed setup to 6800 I only replaced the FD, RD, cog set and battery. The 6800 battery is required as it has needed memory space for the more complex firmware. I waited until I wore out the 10 speed cog set and chain and replaced it with 11. 11s works just fine with older 10s chainrings.
In addition to the existing tuning selections like multi shift and button selection 6800 adds programmable shift modes. Yes, Blip shift for bikes. You can select when the bike shifts front chain rings and block out unwanted combinations. So far I have found it to be seamless in real world use. right hand has Up and Down button. Each time you click you go the the next ratio and the bike shifts the FD and RD as needed. Feel like overriding the FD? Use the left buttons same as always and the bike shifts as you see fit. Along with normal and syncro mode there is a semi syncro mode. You shift the FD and the bike shifts the RD to the proper next ratio. Come up on a hill you tap down to the small ring and the bike sets the rear cog back to the proper ratio so you continue at the same cadence and ready to continue down the range in the small ring. You can change from normal manual mode to full syncro to semi syncro on the fly right on the bike.Shimano’s software also works well. Download of the newer firmware and user interface software was clean and simple. User interface is clean and straight forward.
Have to say it is not all that often you work with something that simply works 100% as advertised and overall exceeds expectations.

I’m thinking of going to Di2 as my upcoming birthday present. I considered eTap, but holy shit it’s expensive compared to Di2. Granted, you just bolt the parts on and ride away, but the cost is definitely prohibitive (like, more than double what a Di2 mini group costs). My main problem is that my bike isn’t technically Di2 ready, so I’d have to drill 2 holes in the frame to make internal routing work. Based on others’ experiences, it actually seems very easy and fairly common, but I’m still a little hesitant. External Di2 is absolutely off the table…

And I am happy with 1x so hopefully SRAM will do that nicely with eTap soon (and hydro brakes).
But Di2 hydro is pretty attractive if I had a Di2-ready frame.

No wires sounds nice and clean for sure. I found that Di-2 wiring to be a one time thing and then there was no “dealing with batteries” I think E-tap might be the ticket on a break down frame but otherwise the wires can be run internal and in ways that internal cabling could not. A hydro based break down frame the wires could pair up with the hydro lines. The wire ends are quite small and can be fished through mech cable holes and the like
For batteries rather than 4 total, 2 of each type to mind and maintain Di-2 has one and it can be internal, protected and very long lasting. I charged the bike once a month or so at best and never ever had it die on me*. I also charged it from a lipstick type portable charger just to see if it would. Di-2 talks to the Edge and it gives me charge info and pop up warnings for the entire system. The FD and RD is smaller than e-tap and the Di-2 wiring wire is simple push and click.*I intentionally let it run low once and it nagged me a few times via the edge, I could hear the motor tone change a bit for a while then only the FD shut down. The RD keeps working for another 300 shifts per Shimano.
SRAM is nuts to not have a 1X in Etap.

The writing is on the wall for this. I’d jump on it in a heartbeat. It would be THE perfect CX setup. And with the R8000 announcement including NO CX-specific stuff (hi, no clutch RDer??)… yet… the sooner SRAM drops 1x hydro ETap, the sooner they’ll have the CX (and gravel!) market cornered.
