What was the last bike you bought? Why did you buy it?

My last bike purchase was a Cannondale Quick 2 that I got at the end of November. In September I had gotten my old 2001 Trek hybrid out of the back of the garage to start commuting by bike, and after really getting into it, I realized I needed something a little more dialed-in for the rigors of commuting. The Quick was a perfect choice, because it is much nicer than what I had been riding, but similar in style: a hybrid, upright riding position, very stable handling, and generally familiar territory for a newbie like me.

So here’s why I’ve started this thread: five months and 2000 miles after my Quick purchase, I’m starting to think I need another upgrade (I’m really looking at the Surly Straggler, but that’s for another thread…really, really looking hard at the Straggler…with jealous eyes and a covetous heart…). Am I crazy to want a different bike so soon? I’ve learned a lot recently: much from doing all that riding, and at least as much from being involved in this forum. I’d like to think I’m being sensible and purposeful about my needs, based on all I’ve learned, and not just succumbing to n+1 frenzy. So tell me: why did you get your last bike? What did you get?

They might have some discounted bikes – I forgot to ask: http://www.islabikes.com/discounted-bikes/

One other option is Trails End out in Purcelville- They stock the line of Cleary bikes.

I was worried about ordering online something without seeing it in person first, so it was nice being able to let my son check it out and go for a spin

Well, since I may be in the market for another N+1, I would really like a Renovo John Day.

There’s also a Ukrainian wooden bike manufacturer.

I really want a Renovo as well. Haven’t figured out which model yet. I think I should go to Portland and see them up close.

    Bad news, good news

After years of abuse, the Jamis 2009 Supernova was put to rest last week.

    The good news?

And after a couple hours and YouTube videos I now know how to replace (shorten) sram hoses and bleed the brakes. They feel great.

…and just when I started getting used to looking for blue bar tape, you go back to orange.

I am quite fickle. I never really liked the blue, but since I had bought it I figured I would use it for the winter and then switched back to orange when I redid my cables earlier this year. (I just reinstalled the same tape yesterday after replacing the brifters.)

Santini Balthus for $65 was a great deal. Bring your own insulation though.

Gabba 2 LS for $165 (it is the jersey, not the convertible jacket).

both recent purchases I’ve been able to try out on some cooler mornings plus, I saw this and thought someone might want them as well…

The purple was Bikenetic’s idea and Jan looked so crestfallen when I initially said “what? no way!” But this is the second time he’s convinced me to choose purple and the second time he was right.

The purple is bling. You have purple Hope hubs too, right? — Though I’m guessing that’s for a different bike [that doesn’t take a mtb crankset].

I really want to get a set (or two) of orange Hope Pro 4 hubs when I rebuild my commuter wheels for 11sp. But since I just bought the S700 hydro right shifter, I’ll stick with 10s until I need to rebuild my wheels for some other reason.

Yeah, the purple hubs are on a different bike although it’s REALLY tempting to get purple hubs for this bike too (old school and well-loved Titus ML-1 26″ full suspension…with extra loud black Hope 2’s).
