I am curious to know how badly they make your feet sweat.
They don’t make your feet sweat
…they just make sure your feet never dry
Remember when Neo broke out of the Matrix and found himself in that pod full of goo? It’s like that.

ParticipantThat sounds horrible. I don’t think I would trade wool for that. … Or trade actual cycling shoes for beach accessories

Wool (Defeet Woolie Boolies) has worked well for me so far (37F has been the coolest ride this year). I am not sure that I will be able to wear the sandals once it drops below 28F, though.
And if they make your feet that funky, I think the waterproof socks will probably not work well for me. Even with the kayaking in an Adventure race.

ParticipantI think it’s more of an issue with how long they stay on your feet. I’ll have them off within an hour, and so am willing to accept moisture trapping for keeping actual rain out and gaining some extra warmth. Still haven’t used them yet.

ParticipantNew dynamo-powered tail light. Very pleased; should have gotten one years ago.
It stays lit for several minutes after stopping, which is how I got this photo.

ParticipantAnd worry not, America. It’s quite a bit brighter than this picture once he’s rolling.

ParticipantJust got my 2nd helmet mirror, after hearing about it elsewhere – the EVT Safe Zone.
It’s quite a bit more adjustable than the Hub Bub mirror that I currently have. You have to take off your helmet and move the Hub Bub around to get close to the desired viewing angle, then you can twist the mirror around a bit to fine-tune it – but only in one plane of motion. The Safe Zone is also larger.
I’ll move the Hub Bub to my backup helmet. Hope to install the Safe Zone soon – took a bit of effort to snap the mounting arm to the positioning arm, then have to play with the placement on the helmet and zip-tie it.

ParticipantMy bikes: now on a bike rack! Got it for $40 off DC Used Bicycle Marketplace from someone in my neighborhood. No idea who made it or if it was a good deal, but it’s sturdy and free standing so perfect for my garage. The guy who sold it to me said it held 2 bikes, but it had the bars and grips on the back side to hold a 3rd…so now it’s a 3 bike rack. We need one more like this since my husband could use one for his bikes (I wont share.)

Bonus is that I was having issues checking my commuter’s back tire for stones/glass thanks to the new fenders. Once on the rack it’s super easy to check it the tires.

ParticipantGot my new Spurcycle bell and installed it on the new bike. Very nice resonance and volume out of that little guy.
Took me a while to decide on a mounting position for the bell. Some people put in the stem, others on the top of the handlebar, etc. I opted for the top of the hook, practically right under the hood. I can actuate the bell from the hood and from the drop of the bar without moving my hand away from the brake/shifter. The bell is small enough to not be in the way if I ever grip the hook too.

Picked up an older Motobecane Super-Mirage at the Velocity Bikes alley sale over the weekend! The plan is a mild restoration over the winter, hopefully have it ready to use for family outings by this spring!

Have you ridden with it in the rain yet? If so, does it do something other than just go, “thunk, thunk”? The Crane Sazu was about the best I have tried, but still has limits and doesn’t fit on 31.8 handlebars. Just saw a photo of the Crane E-ne bell which looks similar in design to the Spurcycle bell (less “tech” though) at about half the cost. Has anyone tried one?

Not yet. That E-ne sure looks similar, but apparently that shop is in just across the bay from Spurcycle.
I’ve found I can accidentally mute the Spurcycle bell by touching it after ringing it. It comes with two different size bands – I used the longer one, as the shorter one would not fit where I wanted the bell (on the hook of the handlebar, just below the hood, so I can still access the hook and drop hand positions, as well as actuate the bell from both positions, and the hood too.
My Incredibell on the other bike worked fine in the rain. The plastic ring probably helps prevent accidental muting of the bell.

ParticipantThe Spurcycle doesn’t really work in the rain, no. It helps if you rub excess water off with a glove, but it is a muted ding.
I love my Spurcycle bell, though. I got it with the kickstarter when they were a slightly less crazy $40-45 (silver/black). That must have been well over a year ago now? It has held up great. I can see the rubber mounting base is deteriorating. But I haven’t had cause to remove the bell, so it is still fine. I mount mine to the right of the stem; it is easy to reach when I am on the hoods (which I usually am).

ParticipantMaybe it depends on where the Spurcycle is mounted, as well as the angle of the bell. These posts claim it works fine in the rain, though one of them includes the phrase “While the ring is a little dampened, the bell is still loud enough…”:
https://www.reddit.com/r/bikecommuting/comments/2dfwo2/i_highly_recommend_the_spurcycle_bell/
https://momentummag.com/spurcycle-ringer-bell-review/
Now I’m not so sure how loud the Incredibell has been in the rain. In that storm which resulted in my shoes being waterlogged (same night I saw the injured cyclist at Glebe and Potomac Ave), I don’t remember using it much. I did encounter a handful of runners and cyclists on the MVT but that’s about it. For all I know it could have been muted too, but I just wasn’t thinking too hard about it.

ParticipantChristmas came a wee bit early – ok, more like I succumbed to Thanksgiving sales:
New commuting shoes. Back to my beloved Sidis (nothing wrong with my current pair of Giro shoes, but I just find the Sidi shoes to fit better).
And a pair of SPD pedals with a decent platform (changing my opinion on my love of Look pedals – fine for regular riding but I have come to prefer the double-sided entry for commuting).
