ParticipantTrying to make up for the riding time I lost this spring and summer…went with a smart trainer partly because I like gadgets, and partly because I think it’ll make trainer riding interesting enough that I’ll do it consistently. Signed up for TrainerRoad and really hoping to up my fitness over the winter.

ParticipantDefinitely sign up for Zwift.
I bought a Tacx Satori and generally was pretty happy with it until my bike slipped somehow and wheel/tire burned a hole in plastic on the roller. Must have been misadjusted(?). Trainer still works, but the power meter does not. It’s OK since I have a power meter in my bikes, I really don’t need that feature anymore — and for that matter can just use the rollers for Zwift.
Have been tempted to get something fancier that does the integrated/smart variable resistance, like a kickr. But so far I haven’t ridden enough inside to justify the expense.

I tried Zwift last night and start my TrainerRoad program tonight. This is my first trainer, so it was a little weird for me…it felt like I was working much harder to get the same power numbers, but then my HR wasn’t actually that high, so obviously I wasn’t. But my legs definitely felt like they were working more…very odd. Maybe it won’t feel so weird on days where I’m not on the trainer immediately after my bike commute.

You aren’t getting any wind as feedback, so that’s probably the biggest difference!

Yeah, it is definitely different. I also find it takes some real deliberate effort to get the HR up. Having a structure really helps. When I’m doing trainer workouts I typically do Sufferfest videos; you can really turn yourself inside out. Did Zwift a few times last year (before burning out the smart trainer) and that was fun too, though I think I prefer Sufferfest for getting an actual workout.
There’s nothing fun about trainer rides, but it’s hard to get the same thing out of an hour on the streets (unless you’re doing a structured ride around HP).
I cannot imagine spending more than an hour on a trainer.

After a few rides, I’m not impressed with TrainerRoad and how it interacts with my trainer. TR indicates it’s in Erg mode, but If I don’t upshift and start cranking, the resistance doesn’t really build, which seems like non-erg mode to me, right? So I have to spin a high cadence in my highest gear (53/12) just to hit the indicated interval power and then it spits out ridiculous speed and mileage numbers for my workout. I fully admit that there may just be a learning curve to Erg mode in TR, but I don’t really care for it.
Then today I saw Zwift added a workout capability that seems to work well, so I cancelled TR and will buy a subscription to Zwift instead. I like the visual feedback of Zwift and it actually makes for a realistic ride, as far as gearing and indicated speeds go…in other words, the way it works with my trainer is exactly what I was expecting/hoping for.

ParticipantBought a set of Veloworks LIT tires a few weeks ago. Finally got around to replacing one on the road bike. I was afraid that the Roubaix wouldn’t have clearance for the tire, but it fit easily and seems pretty similar to the Clement Strada 700×25 I had on there previously. Seems to roll fine so far and it’s definitely #hiviz.

ParticipantToday I bought some new tires, a new right brake lever, and some new bar tape to replace:

Still over 6 weeks away until I can actually think about riding it.

I am curious to know how badly they make your feet sweat.
Winter riding aside, I am doing a 12 hour adventure race in April and waterproof socks sounds like an amazing tool for that race!

Yeah I think they fit like 26s. I have read reviews saying they’re not great traction-wise in the wet, and I noticed the imperfect finish on the tread meant that it took about 50 miles before mine rolled as straight as I would’ve liked. I will probably use them as front only tires, as I think two is overkill (and that way they’ll last longer).
