Edit: I apologize for the tire label not lining up with the valve stem; be assured that I will fix that when we change our first flat. Maybe sooner. I should let Isla know that their attention to detail fell apart a bit there.
Note that the label is exactly opposite the valve stem on both tires. They have plenty of attention to detail, but they drive on the opposite side of the road over there!

ParticipantWow, a kids bike that is not 35 pounds and designed by salesmen to look cool with useless springs and stuff all over it. He is a lucky bugger with a cool dad and I suspect you both will get much happy from this nice red bike. And yes they do grow up fast. Let me know when you might need a 650 wheel size bike . My two are almost grown out of theirs.

ParticipantWe got this last month. It’s been popular, though still as a balance bike…

The only bad news is that I’m so wrapped up in writing my dissertation that I wouldn’t get around to building it up myself until September at the earliest, so I’m having Bikenetic build it up. It should be ready in a week or two–as soon as all the components are in. (I’ll just have to get another bike to build up myself, I guess!)

Man, kids grow up fast. Love the new Isla “orangey red”; this is the Isla Bein 20 small.
No more coaster brake or needing to carry a 15mm wrench strapped under the saddle (though he was quite proud of how “pro” his tube+tool strap was). The published weight of 17lbs and change is right on. 7-speed cassette, standard road hub spacing, QRs, hex bolts everywhere, of course. The more standard tube dimensions in this model (esp. stem/bar) should make it easier to grow the bike too. (On the smaller sizes Isla uses designed-for-them parts, apparently, so you can’t just swap in a longer stem. This OTOH is a 1″ steerer and standard bar.)
Of course, I stripped off the pie plate and seatpost/bar reflectors (the kid has lights for the dark months), so it’s ready-to-ride. I left on the wheel reflectors, since they seem somewhat useful, honestly.
Unfortunately, he also got a much-coveted Bionicle lego set, so that won over riding the new bike tonight.
Edit: I apologize for the tire label not lining up with the valve stem; be assured that I will fix that when we change our first flat. Maybe sooner. I should let Isla know that their attention to detail fell apart a bit there.
Thanks for posting this bike!!! I’ve been looking for a geared mountain bike that would work for my 5 year old, and the local shops haven’t been the most helpful!!!!

Yeah, strongly recommend Islabike. A few of us have them here. Not the cheapest option, but in same order of magnitude as other big brands and quality is really top-shelf. And their customer service is great too.
Apparently gears are really easy to understand, as my son is having a blast on the new bike. Certainly it is making the Arlington hills a lot easier. And it is really nice going farther + faster. Want to do the kids moco with him in Oct. I think we could try the longer version (8-10miles) but since our longest road ride to-date is only 6 miles, we might opt for the shorter route.

ParticipantHad to buy a multitool and a water bottle because guess what I forgot to put in my suitcase. Not like I didn’t have ten water bottles practically staring me in the face when I was packing and that when I opened the bike box I discovered I had included a stocked seat wedge with the Salsa.

It’s been here since December and came in my wife’s household effects (ie the slow boat).
