That is my ti commuter/cx bike; it’s just a Spot fork (the only full-carbon fork I have found for 1 1/8 steerer tube that also has fender eyelets).
Oh! I never noticed that before, and I’ve seen that bike a bunch. It’s probably because you ride so fast, I’ve never been able to see the detail.

ParticipantLatest upgrade:
Replacement drivetrain for the big bike. Upgrading to 10-speed finally, so I decided to go 1×10. Start with an 11-36 cassette and add a one-up 42t granny ring kit (replace the 15/17 with a 16 and add a 42 behind the 36) to get a really wide spread of gearing.
On the bike. Thats a pie plate of a cog in back!

Last time I tried new tires, it was a disaster and I went straight back to the tried-and-true 25mm GP4000S. Well, I decided to take another gamble, giving road tubeless another try with a hopefully better tire. This is the 28mm (tubeless) Schwalbe One. First impression is that it is very comfortable and very grippy. It doesn’t feel any faster rolling than the Conti (and I think the crr is actually a little higher, even for the tubeless version), but it feels very smooth. If this lasts, it might be my new warm-seasons commuter tire.
hozn, keep us updated on the Ones – now that I have TUBELESS
rims I am considering trying tubeless tires and looking for opinions.

Coming soon to a trail near you…
Walked the frameset from the point of purchase 1.2 miles to my office. Pondered strapping it to myself for my ride home but figure I’ll drive in to pick it up a day instead. I’m still shopping for some of the essentials anyways…
Planning to tap some local bike coops for help, as. I don’t have all the tools but do want to learn. Might go with a LBS, but would like to give some cash to the coops in exchange for their willingness to help me learn.
Pretty firm plans for now:
1). Cane creek 40 headset (install with help from Rockville Bike Hub or some other local bike coop)
2). New road/brake cables and housing (also installing with help from bike coop)
3). New 700×35 tires from Nashbar. Worked great on my hybrid so we will give them a try here. Plus they’re only about $17 each!
4). Nashbar canti’s (front and back). I hear they’re Nashbar branded Tektro onyx. Good enough start and only $25 for the pair.Still wondering:
1). Brake cable mount for front – headset vs fork mounted…hmmm…
2). Fenders – 45 mm sks longboards or planet bike brand. Either should do fine.
3). Bar tape…what color will look snazzy…red blue or green…hmmm…
4). Chainstays have a lot of scuffs and scrapes. Thinking some Chainstay protectors might give it a cleaner look and provide some protection. Hmmm…All the other pieces will be transferred over from my parts bin. FSA triple, sora shifters, FD, RD. Ritchey drop bars, Alex wheels, rear rack off my roadie, brooks b17 off my roadie.
All in all, I think I’ll have one nice new to me commuter!

New to me bike day. Built up a Volpe frameset from scratch! Only thing the shop did was install the headset. Pretty proud that I got it all assembled and tuned up on my own. Getting the triple up front certainly took some oomph!
Thinking I might need a shorter stem (90 mm) to bring the reach in a little but otherwise it rides nice and smooth. Fenders come tomorrow and I’ll be well setup with an all-weather commuter!

Yeah when I cranked it to 1080p HD and expanded the picture size, it looked grrrrreat. My GoPro died so this might be my next camera.

The YouTube version has some compression artifacts that don’t show up in the .mp4 (IIRC) file, so it’s actually even better. My only issue so far is that the battery seems to have been sitting for a while (this a discontinued model, after all), so it’s taking a few charge/discharge cycles to get back up to full capacity (or at least get properly calibrated with the unit software).

Man, kids grow up fast. Love the new Isla “orangey red”; this is the Isla Bein 20 small.
No more coaster brake or needing to carry a 15mm wrench strapped under the saddle (though he was quite proud of how “pro” his tube+tool strap was). The published weight of 17lbs and change is right on. 7-speed cassette, standard road hub spacing, QRs, hex bolts everywhere, of course. The more standard tube dimensions in this model (esp. stem/bar) should make it easier to grow the bike too. (On the smaller sizes Isla uses designed-for-them parts, apparently, so you can’t just swap in a longer stem. This OTOH is a 1″ steerer and standard bar.)
Of course, I stripped off the pie plate and seatpost/bar reflectors (the kid has lights for the dark months), so it’s ready-to-ride. I left on the wheel reflectors, since they seem somewhat useful, honestly.
Unfortunately, he also got a much-coveted Bionicle lego set, so that won over riding the new bike tonight.
Edit: I apologize for the tire label not lining up with the valve stem; be assured that I will fix that when we change our first flat. Maybe sooner. I should let Isla know that their attention to detail fell apart a bit there.

Yeah! — I try to do that once a week, assuming I can leave a few minutes early. I’m really proud of how well he does on the trail now. It was a little sketchy the first couple times, but no accidents (or even near accidents, honestly). Just some rolling into streets and a little drifting into the left lane
I’m not sure with this new bike how it’ll work logistically to take it to school in the morning so I can ride home with him — the 14″ fits neatly into the trailer, but this one won’t. I’ll figure something out. — I would just have him ride it in with me, but his school isn’t open at 6:15.

Participant1. Congrats to junior on the new ride. Everyone knows red bikes go faster.
2. Most excellently excellent that you thought it necessary to apologize for the tire label not lining up with the valve… the sign of a connoisseur!
