It’s not strictly a biking purchase but I finally got a smart phone and have downloaded strava.
I downloaded Strava this weekend, too. First time out with it I didn’t set it up properly and obtained no data. The second time out – this morning – it only recorded about 1/3 of my commute. I had my phone in my back jersey pocket, so I don’t know if I inadvertantly stopped Strava or what. I do know that in the 4 hours after I started Strava this a.m. that it soaked up 1/2 of my cellphone battery, so I will have to be more vigilant about closing the app.

ParticipantStrava should soak up little if any battery. Since you are new to smartphones as well, my guess is that something else is going on. Maybe someone at HDCC can help. Also, navigating (vs recording) WILL eat up battery.

I’m new to Strava, but not to smartphones. That said, I could probably compile the entirety of my IT knowledge into 140 characters, so it’s not shocking to me that my rollout here has been less than smooth.

ParticipantAfter talking about it for years, we finally got a sewing machine. I plan to make my own Moose Mitts and essentially a kayak skirt for the back of the Xtracycle so the kids stay warmer and dryer in bad weather. Now I just have to learn to sew.

ParticipantI have purchased the Sparse Bike Lights .. from Urban Outfitters… effectively for 30% off.. which is a solid deal.
But I purchased bike lights from Urban Outfitters for crying out loud. I am so hipster my inseam just shrank ironically.

ParticipantA Tandem! After taking a nice tandem ride with my dear daughter this summer we have been looking for a cheap used tandem for us to putter around on. I found an early 1980s (?) Gottfried tandem on craig’s list. Not a terribly desirable or high tech light weight bike but it looked to be low miles, all there and the price was less than its rear hub alone. the bike has 700c wheels and the rear has a nice near new Phil Woods tandem hub with a Mavic wheel and 3rd (drum) brake.
Stripped it to bare frame and ultrasonic cleaned all the greasy parts. All the grease and oil was dried hard but there was little wear on anything. Looks like the bike originally came with center or side pull brakes that were replaced with add on cantilever brakes. The brakes would twist out of alignment when pulled hard so I made 2 yokes from some scrap aluminum to cure that. We finished it just in time for wet weather which my Dear Daughter seems to be too smart to want to ride in.December 4, 2014 at 12:44 am #1016215Harry Meatmotor

Le Sigh…At least my girl likes the bike….
Good thing I did not take pictures with the other side of the shop in the background. (note to self. Bike images in front of garage not inside garage.

57 coupe converted into a race car a long time ago and then raced as the Good Dr. intended. It has rubbed paint in many a corner. I am converting it back to rat rod street form for a fellow Porsche nut. Bathtubs are fun but Longhoods are downright sexy. 😎
freshly built Tarmac included to cover the bike content requirement.December 4, 2014 at 5:32 pm #1016270DaveK

Tandem bicycle content – are cantis really strong enough to stop that bike in a hurry? I’d take a hard look at mini-Vs for it.

As to the brakes I don’t know just yet. Fresh un ridden build but will test the setup single then with an added 90 pounds of happy chatty stoker. The bike also has a drum brake but that seems to be more for speed tuning rather than panic or hard stopping. EDIT just looked at mini V. Llike I might be able to convert the existing setup to mini v if needed. Thanks for the tip.
Wish I got to flog the 356. all I get to do is undo all the built up “racing residue” left by others. I can attest that the rude crude white one in the background dispenses pure compressed adrenaline and the underpowered but rewarding green one generates smiles.
