I’m pondering plastic bags over wool socks (possibly sandwiched by another sock). If that doesn’t work, I have mixed platform-spd pedals, and I’ll just go to wearing “normal” winter shoes.

I’ve been doing this with the cold snap. Wool socks, plastic bags and another pair of wool socks. It has kept my toes from being unbearably frozen (still cold, but i’d expect it after 1.5 hours commuting).

With my SPD sandals I did 20 miles in medium weight wool socks and plastic bags in the downpour on Monday, and it wasn’t bad. For the cold on Tuesday and Wednesday I did a base layer of a pair of my light summer socks with heavy wool socks on top, and again, pretty decent in the sandals. I would say my toes were cold, but not bothersome in that my-toes-are-freezing way, and they weren’t worse off than my fingers. I think the base layer is making the most difference; the plastic bags I used were only as a rain layer.

Never understood the plastic bag trick – doesn’t it make your feet sweat like crazy and then become very cold?

Nice shoe covers (aka “booties”) work quite well. If one suffers from cold feet then the investment in good quality winter cycling shoes is also a good option.

I’m giving the Wolvhammers another workout today but so far they have got to be the best $300 I’ve spent in a long, long time.

    Bottom bracket tool:

Now all I need is a bottom bracket. I’ll be posting that on my fixed gear thread, though.

    These prescription goggles…

…which give me the fish-eye lens effect, and a headache. I didn’t wear them on the ride home from picking them up, because I thought I might crash. It will be increments of wearing them around the house until I’m used to them and can wear them on the bike!

These things are in many ways nicer than my regular glasses! They have transitions lenses and all kinds of fancy coatings. I hadn’t used my insurance benefit for the year, so most of the cost was covered; there was maybe $200 that came out of my pre-tax FSA spending, and direct out-of-pocket cost was only about $80. Because of my nerd-level nearsightedness, I had very little option as to what style to get: even the Rudy Project inserts wouldn’t take my prescription, so there was no real cycling-specific option. I ended up with a sort of racquetball kind of thing, but the lenses are big enough that I’m hoping for good wind protection, which is my main need after this spring’s massive eye infection. I wore them around the house for about a half-hour today, and was getting used to them, but that’s about all I could take. I’ll try again some tonight, but I am not sure I’ll be ready to ride with them to work tomorrow.

No-wuhhh! I have to play for the Thanksgiving Day service at the church. I guess that’s what I get for being an organist.

It’s not strictly a biking purchase but I finally got a smart phone and have downloaded strava.

Been kind of a busy week since I bought Bert (my new Surly Pugsley Ops) but I took him out for a spin on the Greenway on Saturday. So much fun to ride but riding through the snow and ice was like riding through wet sand. A great legs and heart workout but I only managed to ride eight miles in an hour.

8 MPH on a fat tire bike… in deep snow… in MN cold is pretty frigg’n fast if you ask me. Kudos buddy!

It was actually a little toasty on Saturday – 30° and quite humid and sunny – so I was roasting like a Thanksgiving turkey out there. It is a GREAT workout but when the snow is like wet sand I think I’m going to be lucky to do 10 miles until I drop another 50lbs or so. Today it’s a balmy -2° (but feels like -9°) so the snow should be nice and frozen for easy riding. Well, at least I hope it is.
